Chemical solution for killing bindweeds issued to farmers
Farmers receive instructions for a chemical weed killer using three pounds of dry sodium chlorate per square rod. The guidance notes that this rate may suffice on ordinary land, but very rich soil could require two to three times that amount to effectively eradicate bindweed.
Chlorate weed control on old straw and hay stacks
Agricultural college researchers report the usual chlorate amount cannot kill bindweeds or thistles on old straw or hay stack bottoms unless all surface material is removed. Moisture and season affect effectiveness, with fall and early spring best. Success hinges on removing top growth and allowing the chemical to act on roots.
