County Treasurer Herbert Stevens reports a 20 percent rise in driver licenses issued this year over two years ago. The luncheon at the Christian Church was served by F H A mothers with help from the local foods committee. Homemaking students prepared the chicken dish, decorations matched the Our American Neighbors theme, and Pan American touches graced the setting. After lunch the group watched two films at the high school and a Santa show with South American costumes followed by a talent show.
John B. Quinn of Lincoln, brother of Mrs. McKinley McIntosh of Sidney, hired by the Foreign Operations Administration to conduct an economic survey in Europe. A former Sidney student, Quinn will study how European nations can boost dollar earnings and narrow the import export gap with the United States. He will spend four to five weeks abroad, visiting Lisbon, Madrid, Rome, Paris, Brussels, Vienna, Geneva, London, The Hague, Frankfurt and Bonn at a daily rate of $50. Quinn, Harold Stassen’s Nebraska campaign manager in 1952, will also examine trade investments and European efforts to promote American travel.
Parcel post rates rose last week in Sidney and across the country, excluding air parcels. The increase adds three cents for a one pound local parcel, reaching $1.63 for a 40 pound parcel to zone eight over 1800 miles. Weight and size limits are set, with 72 inches combined length and girth, and exceptions for rural routes, certain items, and military or territorial destinations.
Mild weather ends as frost hits western Nebraska with 24 degrees in Sidney and lows around 20 to 34 across the Panhandle. The shot gun slaying of Mrs. Griffith near Sidney last year led to Hugh Griffith being condemned to die on October 16. Sidney attorney Pat Heaton made an emotional bid in the Nebraska Supreme Court arguing Griffith’s guilt could not be proven, while noting a second nearby killing in 18 months. Justice Chappell and Judge Wenke cautioned that the verdict rests with the jury, not the court, and Heaton pointed to disputed witness testimony and a missing key witness found dead in rail yard.

National Parent Teacher Association Week runs October 4 to 10. Mrs. Ralph Welch, Sidney PTA Council chair, says the week will not be specially observed here but urges all prospective members and the public to value and support the PTA. A highlight is the Senior High School PTA meeting this Wednesday for a Back to School night program.
The Kiwanis Club of Sidney will honor area newspapers at the October 7 meeting in observance of National Newspaper Week October 1 to 8. The program includes representatives from The Sidney Telegraph. National Newspaper Week, run by Newspaper Association Managers, Inc., promotes press freedom and informed public.
Cheyenne County Rural Youth announces a get acquainted party for all prospective members to be held Wednesday night at the Benzel Barn. All prospective members are invited to attend.
Reporters chase a scoop on Thursdays surprise feature at the Fox Theatre only to be outflanked by Elmer Haines who secreted the film in a vault at Sidney National Bank. The plan was to reveal the title before the print readied for projection but the vault caper foiled the attempt. The weekly surprise will show a big box office hit or praised new release unseen by staff prior to showtime.
City officials cleared the vacant hotel lot at 9th and King for Oil Progress Week starting October 11. An outdoor display of heavy machinery and a drilling demonstration will take place, with Ohio Oil Company and Clair Hess directing. Cheyenne County schools will exhibit entries at the City Auditorium.
James Anderson, 48, Alliance, pleaded guilty to second degree murder in the shooting of Mrs. Louise Thomas at a Sidney County scene last Wednesday night. He waived a preliminary hearing and was bound over to district court on $5,000 bond. Thomas died Friday afternoon in Sidney Hospital after being shot in the stomach at close range with a .410 shotgun.
The Sidney area opened Fire Prevention Week with 91 fires since December 12, 1952. September led with 15 fires, July with 14, and total reported damage stood at $33,000 though actual damage is likely higher due to underreporting, especially rural incidents. Major indoor blazes occurred at several homes including the Rogers and Schnell properties, plus Hardy Apartments. Only three false alarms occurred. one notable call on June 30 at 1244.
