Dreuth officials report 208 head sold at the first emergency relief sale in Cheyenne county with 16 calves condemned and 15 cattle deemed unfit for market. Bids exceeded expectations, promising relief without disrupting normal sales. 100 head remained unsold toward the county quota of 250. Continued on Page 8.
The wheat belt baseball season ends Sunday as Sidney and Kimball meet in the 1934 championship on the Kimball diamond. The Seals may use Lefty Peterson if his arm heals, while Kimball plans Erv or Jack Marlatt based on workouts. Erv lost last Sunday's game. Jack Rom Marlatt won 4 to 1 in the night cap.
The bodies of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Miola who died in an automobile accident on September 24 were forwarded to Trenton New Jersey Tuesday morning for burial. Am brose Miola the oldest child accompanied them. The other five children will remain in Sidney until they recover enough to be sent back to Trenton.
Two Republican standard bearers spoke here this week in the campaign for the fall election. Albert N. Mathers of Gering, candidate for congress, spoke Monday night. Dwight Griswold, nominee for governor, appeared Wednesday afternoon. Both criticized the New Deal.
A demonstration of the McCormick Deering Hammer Mill operation is planned for Saturday at the Bab cock Implement Company building across from The Sidney Sales Pavilion. Mr Babcock invites all interested attendees. Three other demonstrations have taken place on farms this week.
A group of Sidney lawyers with Roland Redman and Frank Smith of Kimball formed a Tewell for Supreme Court Club in Sidney. A program to boost Sidney man’s candidacy was tentatively adopted and a resolution endorsing him was unanimously approved at a meeting in the offices of Radcliffe and Wehmiller.
Two youths held in Cheyenne county jail seek parole on October 10 to commute their sentences for escaping custody after prison terms. Melvin and Otto Christeson received one and a half year terms for jail breaking, now serving post break in. John Fisher and Charles Cash, with seven year sentences for kidnapping and child stealing, also request commuted sentences. Frank Owens, a Douglas county resident, seeks a commutation of his life term for shooting his wife. Herbert Wright and Albert Lucas, tied to a bank robbery in Omaha, ask for shorter terms. Other cases include James Carr, a Douglas county robber, with a 3 to 5 year sentence set for October 21, 1931.
The Union Pacific has completed a new streamlined night train of six cars for road tests. It features three sleeping cars of a radically different design, will be tested on the main line west of Omaha after leaving Chicago, and is powered by a 900 horsepower diesel motor capable of 110 miles per hour with a cruising speed around 90.
Postmaster Leroy Larson reports east bound mail must be at the post office by 5 p.m. to catch the evening train due to time changes. The shift raises the evening load for both east and west trains, with the 5:20 west bound rush making it impossible to sort and forward the east mail in time for the 6:20 east bound departure.
Democratic candidate Harry B. Coffee will speak in Sidney Monday evening at eight o'clock after winning the party nomination by a four to one margin. His schedule lists Alliance 12:45 p.m., Bridgeport 2:30, Dalton 4, Gurley 5, and Sidney that night, with no outdoor loudspeaker details provided.
More than 125 farmers from ten Nebraska counties and parts of eastern Wyoming attended the district Farmers Union gathering. Robert Robertson of Sidney was elected president, with J. J. Schefsik as vice president and George Phillips as secretary-treasurer. Tax reduction measures dominated discussion as Frank Arnold outlined county government costs and urged restraint on new levies. The delegates approved multiple resolutions including field staff in the panhandle, bond rules, and tax reforms, with talks on a one house legislature and county manager system. The 1935 district convention will be in Box Butte county.
Hundreds of new Tele graph and Telegraph News readers were added during a recent drive. Many names could not be recorded in time but individual papers will be mailed today with a new mailing list expected in time for the Tuesday issue. The Telegraph prints the delinquent tax list as required by law in three consecutive issues. Compiled last week, the list spans over 12 columns and shows several hundred fewer delinquencies than last year. County officials credit allotment checks and improved conditions for the drop.
The chamber of commerce committee appointed to interview Frank G Arnold, president of the Nebraska Taxpayers League, Wednesday will report to the organization next Monday. The committee members questioned Arnold along several tax lines and secured information described as very interesting.
Detroit Tigers evened the world series at one apiece by defeating the St Louis Cardinals 3 to 2 in 12 innings. Schoolboy Rowe pitched for Detroit and Goose Goslin drove in the winning run. St Louis had won game one 8 to 3.
Sidney's Maroons open a non conference warm up this afternoon before entering the 1934 league pennant chase. Lodge Poles Blue and White oppose on Sidney field at 3 oclock. Black aims to test Maroon lineups while Wests Lodge Pole team is expected to provide a tough test in this long time series.
The Womans club held its first meeting of the year as a luncheon re assembly on Tuesday in the club rooms. Forty seven members attended representing most of the membership. Mrs F A Bush the new president presented work plans in a comedy format. The club has 75 members for the year a gain over last year. Delegates Mrs Archie Kirkpatrick and Mrs F H Wolf were named to attend the state convention at Fairbury October 9 and 10. Honorary members received corsages and officers bouquets. A birthday cake with 30 candles marked the Sidney club’s age. Mrs John McCleneghan recounted the club’s history from the land donation for the library to the present.
Hunters await pheasant and duck seasons in Nebraska with pheasant opening October 12 and duck season October 16 to November 14. Farmers report plentiful pheasants and expect a heavy barrage. Sidney residents plan new blinds on the river as drought reshapes hunting spots and favorable days for duck and goose flights are anticipated.
A Telegraph feature invites a lucky young couple to have all wedding expenses paid in Sidney. Details are secret for now but interested couples should leave their names. Plans cover attire and all marriage costs, addressing a common hurdle to matrimony.
City authorities defend a new loading zone program aimed at farmers and shoppers. They say the zones limit parking to 15 minutes not to levy fines, issuing tickets as reminders. Some merchants oppose. farmers’ benefits cited, with continued review planned. Continued on Page 8.
Nebraska corn-hog contract farmers average 361 per farm in benefit payments this season. The contracted corn returns average 7.14 per acre, over twice the 1932 December 1 value and higher than 1933 December 1. Most payments have been distributed with two more anticipated, aiding farmers in drouth stricken counties.
The Western Public Service company runs a lighting campaign to educate the public on proper home lighting for reading. It markets floor and bridge lamps and provides guidance on the amount and focus of light to reduce eye strain.
A music program for third to eighth graders is launched by J. W. Cochran in Sidney public schools. The meeting is next Monday at the junior high, with classes starting Monday Oct 22. Free sessions cover strings on Tue Fri and winds band on Mon Wed Thu, inviting all children and parents to discuss the move. Residents watch a separate Potter murder case as Osceola youth Ida Hanson’s slaying draws attention. Suspect C W Neal, a former Potter resident, is arrested after being linked to Hanson in Colorado. Police trace her movements before her disappearance, with Neal previously seen with Hanson around July 4 1932.
Federal Relief Administrator Haynes of Nebraska said October needs could be met with September funds plus fuel, barring changes. Plans for October relief will go to the state relief committee Friday. He has not received official word from Washington on meat processing funds, but press dispatches implying a $1,362,580 allotment suggest no change to that item.
Louis Blaha uncovered a large black widow on the south side of his garage after lifting an old car body. He captured the venomous spider and displayed it in a capped bottle, noting the red hourglass on its underside as it spun a web contentedly in captivity.
Arrangements were completed for dentists of the district to hold a convention in Sidney on November 12 and 13, in conjunction with the annual meeting of doctors from the 11th Nebraska council district. About 75 dentists and their wives are expected, with around 400 doctors anticipated on the program. Noted medical men will appear.
J journeyman and several boss barbers attended Wednesday to the tensorial needs of citizens of Scotts bluff. The rest of the work men in 17 shops refused to report for duty unless prices were set at 40 cents for hair cuts and 25 cents for shaves in the main business districts and 35 cents for hair cuts and 20 cents for shaves in outlying shops. The present limit is 25 cents for a haircut, though shops have sometimes offered three for a quarter. Union officials warned strikers to stay idle until demands are met, but a meeting between union representatives and shop owners was arranged.
The Cheyenne county relief report is questioned by the Telegraph. Lincoln's report cites 61.4 percent of relief cases assigned to work, but the figure would rise if nonworking eligibles were removed from the calculation.
Congressman Edward R. Burke, a Democratic candidate for United States senator, will address voters in Sidney on October 13 at 2 p.m. under the auspices of the local Democratic committee.
Dr Darwin H Foster a Glendale Arizona dentist who worked on John Frahm is dead. He was a key witness in the murder trial of Fred Frahm who is accused of killing his brother John who vanished in 1929.
