Melchior M. Herbert 91 former Fort Sidney infantry veteran and longtime farmer died Wednesday at Memorial Hospital. Funeral Monday at St. Patrick's with burial in Greenwood. rosaries Sunday at the funeral home. Survivors include three daughters, eleven grandchildren, and one great grandchild. Former soldier and local historian known for early western frontier stories.

John J. Schiel Jr. formerly left Cheyenne County Court after a $5 fine and $4 costs for driving without a Nebraska license. He was jailed again on a no fund check charge after being arrested in Colorado, pleading guilty and fined $50 plus $12 costs, with $62 owed plus the prior fine.

Daniel Brandt 72 Dies in North Platte Hospital
Daniel Brandt 72 a former Sidney resident and Union Pacific worker died last night in a North Platte hospital after two years of declining health. He lived in North Platte with a daughter since Aug 1. Funeral services are Monday at 1 pm at Gehrig and Son with burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Graveside rites will be by VFW and American Legion. Born July 5 1886 in Cheyenne he was WWI veteran who served overseas over a year. He married Marie Barbara Lauderback March 4 1917 in Crook Colorado. she died March 1 1948. Survivors include four daughters three sons 15 grandchildren a sister and a brother.

Tickets for the Oil Progress Week banquet at the Youth Center on Saturday October 18 go on sale immediately. Chamber of Commerce members have early access until October 9, then open to the public. Tickets cost 250 dollars and seating is first come first served. A social hour precedes at the Elks Club from six to seven with a humorous skit by Casper cast titled The Plight of The Prairie Flower or What Can She Do With An Oil Well. Tickets also sold at the Chamber office.

Weymouth to be Honored in 33rd Year at Sidney
George Hinn announces an innovation at the football game for a tribute to O. J. Weymouth Sidney superintendent of schools on his 33rd year in the local system. Weymouth arrived in 1925 as an English teacher and later served as athletic coach and high school principal before becoming superintendent in 1944. The band will form anniversary dates and perform song and maneuvers in a halftime salute.

Safflower Harvest Expands as Pacific Vegetable Oil Plant Grows
In Sidney the Pacific Vegetable Oil Corp plant enters its second year with safflower intake climbing to 50 000 bushels and 344 ton cookers filling. The operation expects to process about 8 000 tons or 409 000 bushels before April closure, supported by Panhandle farmers delivering around 1 000 tons so far. Recent rain slowed harvest but activity remains strong.
