Yankees Win First Game Of Series 1957 World Series

The New York Yankees defeated Milwaukee 3 to 0 in the opening game of the 1957 World Series. Whitey Ford allowed five hits with five strikeouts for his fifth World Series win. Andy Carey delivered a perfect squeeze bunt in the sixth to drive in Yogi Berra. Milwaukee’s starter Warren Spahn pitched five and one third, with reliever Ernie Johnson and Gen McMahon finishing. The paid attendance was 69,459 as the Yankees took a 1-0 series lead.

Harvest Of Sugar Beets To Begin In Lodgepole Valley

W C McGuffey of Great Western Sugar Co Ovid district says sugar beets in Lodgepole Valley will start next Tuesday. Anticipate another good crop with slightly higher tonnage and possible lower sugar content. It will take about three weeks to harvest all irrigated beets in Cheyenne County and about 100 days for the Ovid region. Dry beans harvest is finished for the year. corn safflower and sorghum are mostly past frost risk.

Nebraska records state oil and gas sales exceed 5 million

Nebraska for the first time reports state produced oil and gas sales surpassing five million dollars in August with gross receipts of 5,242,500 and severance tax totals of 101,805. Western oil production drives the rise as daily crude runs exceed 56,000 barrels late September, with August output at 1,739,384 barrels yielding 102, snl in revenue.

Cheyenne County commissioners tabled a wage increase petition from women deputies and clerks at the courthouse suggesting no action soon. Sidney's electric distribution department faces delays as the new truck body and frame, bought last April for 10107 dollars, reach Omaha four months after planned spring delivery. A final check in Omaha found mechanical issues. after towing to Big Springs, repairs were underway today. The old line truck will be sold once the new unit is fully operational.

Chappell Youth Faces Four Charges In County Court Here

An 18-year-old Chappell youth, Robert Arnold, faces four counts including driving under the influence hit and run operating without a Nebraska license and obstructing traffic. Deputy Kermit Brumbaugh outlined the sequence from Sidney to Peetz to Chappell with involvement of Wayne Fisher and two 18-year-old Sidney girls. Arnold allegedly assaulted a passing motorist and later sought to attack another vehicle while en route to the girl’s father.

John Miller 67 Victim Of Heart Attack At Hospital

John William Miller 67 died late yesterday afternoon at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after a heart attack. Funeral services will be Friday 2 pm at St Pauls Lutheran Church with Rev Henry Dorn officiating. burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may go to St Pauls mission fund. Miller, born April 24, 1896 in Frohna Missouri, lived in Wenedy and Sidney before joining the Union Pacific as a maintenance foreman and custodian at the Sidney schools. Survivors include wife Mary, daughter Rita Englund of Sidney, sons Reuben of Cumberland Maryland and Eugene of Ponca City Oklahoma, six grandchildren, sister Mrs. H. G. Mangels of Ft Morgan, and brother Constantin of Rochester Minnesota.

Lodgepole Boy Injured in Vehicle Crash Near Sunol

A 14 year old Lodgepole boy was injured with back injuries and possible drug involvement after the 1955 model car he drove went out of control on a county road about two miles east and three miles north of Sunol. The driver identified as Gene Hokum possessed a school diving permit.

Ben Planck Dead In California City

Former Sidney resident Benjamin Earl Planck aged 58 died Monday night in a Riverside California hospital. He was a brother of Forrest Planck of Sidney and visited Sidney with his wife for nearly three months this summer. Funeral services are set for tomorrow at 2 pm from Hughes Mortuary in Lima Loma California. He was born February 21 1899 on the homestead nine miles northeast of Sidney. Survivors include his wife Katherine and brother Forrest. He was preceded by his parents a brother Frel and sister Mrs. Alice Dresser. Mr and Mrs Forrest Planck left this morning by train to attend the funeral.

Rites Thursday In Scottsbluff For P. H. Knight 76

Peter Henry Knight a former Scottsbluff resident and retired mortician died Monday night at home. Final rites set for 10 a m Thursday at Benson Funeral Home Scottsbluff with Rev Timothy Molony officiating and burial in Fairview Cemetery. Knight born Oct 20 1886 in Scott County Iowa operated a funeral home in Thermopolis Wyoming then Scottsbluff from 1929 until retirement in 1949. He moved to Sidney in 1950 and ran a motel until ill health led to retirement about two years ago. He served in Wyoming legislature eight years and was a member of Masonic Elks and Moose lodges. Survivors include wife Opal and step-daughter Lila.

Postal Windows To Close At Noon Saturdays

Sidney postoffice will close its windows at noon on Saturdays starting Oct 12 acting postmaster Don Gillham announced. The station has operated 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. six days a week, with Saturday afternoon mail flow considered insufficient to justify weekend hours. Also set are Christmas mailing deadlines for overseas, Far East by Oct 15 and Europe plus Near East Africa by Nov 1 with Nov 10 as last day for Europe and S and C America packages.
