The Chamber of Commerce urges shoppers to beat the crowd and secure attention from clerks before the rush. Postal officials remind that international mailing deadlines have passed, and urge quick completion of other Christmas mailings. Christmas is approaching rapidly.
Col. C J Sanders of the Nebraska Safety Pros warns motorists that Thanksgiving weekend is a privilege not a right. He cites a National Safety Council study showing 77 fatal accidents per 100 drivers with speed, center-line violations, and intoxication as major factors. Sanders notes no traffic deaths on Thanksgiving Day last year but four deaths over the weekend following.
Fox Theatre will run daily shows starting at 1 30 p m from Thursday through Monday according to manager Elmer Haines.
A rash of six traffic accidents left two people hospitalized and several with minor injuries. Richard Finley, 19, was listed in satisfactory condition with back and chest injuries after a one car crash south of Sidney. His brother Dixon, the driver, was to receive X rays for back and head pains. Dorothy Mahaffey of Sidney was also listed in satisfactory condition after a two car intersection collision near Sidney. Michael J. Hartzler’s car hit Mahaffey’s auto, spinning it around. A separate two car collision south of Dalton involved Donald J. Loxterkamp turning right and being struck by Donald W. Sherwood. Sherwood, 29, suffered head abrasions. Sherwood’s car sustained about 350 dollars in damage. The Safety Patrol and State Trooper Felix Koenig reported the incidents.
The Union Thanksgiving Service, run by the Sidney Ministerial Association, will be at 7:30 p.m. at First Methodist Church. Rev. W. K. Hasenyager will preach Gratitude's Rewards to the Testifying-For Protestants. Mayor Ferris Preble will deliver the presidential proclamation after remarks by Rev. Townsend. Music by the Methodist Junior Choir. organist Mrs. Dotts. Pastors from Holy Trinity Lutheran, Light Memorial, Nazarene, Calvary Baptist, Grace Baptist, First Methodist, Assembly of God join.
Western Nebraska oil patch will quiet this week as rigs shut down for Thanksgiving. Nebraska production holds around 57 743 barrels daily with small producers and several drillings in Slama, Mohart, Lane and Kimball counties. Discovery updates include Herb Linn in Kimball County and Barrett No D 1 Barrett in Banner County as crews move to new locations.
A second narcotics theft in Sidney within a week is reported after a medical kit was stolen from Dr. Chris Bitner's car. The prior incident emptied 20 cc of Demerol from Memorial Hospital. similar thefts occurred in Holy Springs and Cheyenne. A blank prescription pad was also taken and matches were found at break-ins, suggesting a theft for emergency use.
Kimball County Hospital prepares for sealed bids next Wednesday for a three way expansion increasing patient capacity to nearly double. Walter Rodman, chairman of the Board of Trustees, notes bids already total a half dozen with construction not starting until spring. New north, east and south wings will be added and a central oxygen system plus air conditioning will be installed.
Three Gurley youths pleaded guilty to thefts at Sioux Ordnance Depot in Cheyenne County. Ron Frame received 25 dollars plus costs for theft and accessory after the fact with four receivers taken on Sept 28 and Oct 20 25 31. Lavone Rhode and Ron Engelland also paid 25 dollar fines plus costs with restitution sums.
Wheat at 1.58 dollars per bushel quoted today by local elevator sources.
Government crop observers report favorable Nebraska prospects as moisture last week renewed surface moisture across much of the state. Northeastern Nebraska saw good moisture after a dry spell, while other areas had only partial relief. Pastures and range feed improved as dust was washed off, rains settled dust in fields and feed lots, and corn picking neared completion with less than five percent remaining.
A fire destroyed drilling equipment on an oil rig 13 miles southwest of Sidney on the Francis Range farm. Two men were working the rig when the blaze started around 11 45 a m Tuesday. Firemen controlled the fire quickly but full extinguishment took a couple more hours. Damage amount not yet reported. W F Rogers of the Rogers Drilling Co of Scottsbluff inspected the site afterward.
Sterling Colorado sheriff's office investigates a Sunday morning break in at the Peetz Co-op service station. Deputy Bob Pope reports only $3 and small change removed from the cash drawer while station manager John Hill says no tools or supplies were taken.
