The state highway patrol is nine years old and a review of its record shows Nebraska has been getting its money’s worth. Safety officers have driven 18 311 437 miles assisted 128 057 motorists with flat tires and empty gas tanks staged 5 395 safety programs arrested 47 685 motorists fined 463 037 01 dollars to state school funds issued 39 522 warnings removed 68 481 obstacles from highways and helped cut Nebraska highway deaths from 322 in 1937 to a yearly average of 221 since that year. Stationed in Sidney now are Patrolmen Jack Knudtson and R L Nichols. Knudtson is a veteran and Nichols became a patrolman this year.

Fred Baker Former Sidney Man Dies in Kimball
Fred L. Baker, 59, a former Sidney resident, died suddenly at his Kimball home. Found in his apartment after a telephone chat with a friend, his funeral was held in Kimball with interment at Potter beside his wife who died in 1937. He worked for the Joe A. Gibson organization in Kimball and Sidney, selling cars before moving there. He is survived by four daughters.

Electrician at Depot Dies in Car Accident near Sidney
Hubert Whitcomb, 45, an electrician at Sioux Ordnance Depot, was found dead in his car after a single vehicle wreck on a depot road. The crash likely occurred Saturday evening. his car rolled down a 30 foot embankment and was barely visible from the highway. Whitcomb lived at Ordville, resided in Sidney since 1941, and had worked as electrical shop foreman at the depot. He is survived by his wife Doris Irene Way, three children, his mother, a sister, and two brothers. Funeral services were held at The Gehrig Funeral Home with burial in Scottsbluff. Born September 26, 1901, Whitcomb previously worked for Fairbanks Morse and Consumers Public Power District. He attended the Nebraska School of Agriculture and served as depot electrician for about three and a half years. The exact cause of leaving the road could not be determined.
