95 Bases Axed Threatens Local Jobs At Sioux Depot

Defense Sec. Robert McNamara announced closing 95 bases prompting a three year phase out at Sioux Army Depot in Cheyenne County. About 63,000 jobs are affected nationwide. Local plans include retraining, reuse of facilities, and potential land uses for a state trade school and an agricultural experiment station pending approvals.

Contract Signed To Buy Frontier

Washington RKO General Inc announced it has signed a contract to acquire 54 percent of Frontier Airlines, Denver. The deal values 651,308 shares at $10 each, par value $1, closing January 5 at First National Bank of Jersey City. CAB approval applications were filed jointly by RKO General, General Tire and Rubber Co, and Aerojet General Corp.

Arrests in Montana May Solve County Breakins

Cheyenne County authorities say they have the suspects in custody in Livingston Montana for possible Nov. 8 burglaries at Dalton and Gurley and the Nov. 10 Farmers Elevator at Lodgepole. Stanley Putnam and David Murray face possible burglary charges and transport of stolen property across state lines. Wayne Cansler identified a .3006 rifle as taken from Wayne and Millie’s Bar. FBI decision pending before suspects can be returned.

New Car Dealers Earn Citation On Safety Checks

The Sidney New Car Dealers Association earned state and national recognition for sponsoring vehicle safety-check programs. It was named one of three Nebraska groups to receive achievement awards, joining Havelock and Scottsbluff. The program has run the past two years with limited response, and its future is uncertain. Great Western Sugar Pays Beet Growers in 1964 First Installment

Denver Nov. let Great Western Sugar Company announce a payment of 1 235 000 to beet growers for beets delivered between November 5 and 21. The payment, averaging 9 58 per ton, covers the initial installment for the 1964 crop and will be made December 1. Frank A Kemp, president, stated the payout nearly completes the first payment stage.

Partly cloudy with a cold northeast wind of 25 to 35 mph this afternoon. Fair tonight and Saturday. Low tonight zero to 10 above, high Saturday 25 to 35. Five day outlook: temperatures through next Wednesday average eight degrees below normal with daily changes. Highs in the 30s, lows 10 to 20. Brief periods of light snow indicated.

Extra Coverage At No Extra Three Hurt In Accident

Extra circulation at no extra cost will be a bonus for Sidney Telegraph advertisers next Wednesday Nov 25. Two vehicles were wrecked and three people severely injured in a county road collision south of Sidney around 2:55 p.m. Thursday. Deputy Sheriff Gene Morris said the crash occurred one mile south of Leonard Rieken farm, six miles south and a mile west of Sidney. The injured, treated at Memorial Hospital, include Mrs Robert Laffer with concussion and facial cuts plus collarbone fracture, her infant Daniel with a leg fracture, and Gene Tumbleson with a broken back listed as critical.

Snowstorm hits Nebraska Panhandle with heavy Dalton snowfall

A fast moving snowstorm blanketed parts of the Nebraska Panhandle with scattered snow and a heavy burst in Dalton where Don Dey Ermand reported three to four inches. Gusts peaked at 55 mph near Sidney after midnight with temperatures dropping from 38 to 19 by morning. Roads slick, overshoes needed, and a car stalled north of Dalton prompted a ride into town. Two students were left at the scene as rescuers sought help.
