First woman pilot from Overland Air Service earns license
Betty Lockhart, wife of Mel Lockhart and mother of five, became the first woman student at Lloyd and Butch Carr’s Overland Air Service to receive her private pilot license. She soloed on Nov 12 and earned the license after a long year balancing family duties, teaching music, and flying when possible. The Lockharts, based in Sterling, use the Piper Cherokee C for quick trips and family adventures, including a notable summer flight to Los Angeles. Betty’s four year old son Tracy led cheers as she finally completed her training.

New Regulations On Weed Control Studied by Delegation
A Cheyenne County delegation returned from Columbus after attending a statewide meeting on the new noxious weed law. County Clerk Ralph Englert and three Cheyenne County Noxious Weed Control Board members, Bob Lafler, Archie Greenwood, and Jack McVicker, discussed the law which now covers incorporated towns and rural areas. All funds will be distributed through the county clerk after filing and processing claims. Englert is preparing a detailed article on the district’s duties and functions.

Young Musicians Of St. Pat's To Perform Sunday
In honor of St. Cecelia, a recital will be held at St. Patrick's High School Auditorium Sunday at 4 p.m. The fourth grade Tonette class opens with two numbers, followed by a select fifth and sixth grade choir performing three pieces. Kimball Approves 10 Percent Electric Rate Cut
Kimball authorized an across the board ten percent reduction in electricity rates to start December 4. The average household will see about a 1.45 dollar monthly decrease, with larger cuts for many users including businesses. The move follows the utility department becoming debt free six months earlier after paying revenue bonds and building a small reserve.

Government Day Set For Next Monday
More than 100 junior class students from Cheyenne County high schools will gather at the courthouse for the County Government Day program sponsored by the county American Legion Posts. Elections are underway in schools to name officials echoing those serving the county. The day includes a 9 a.m. general session in the district courtroom with county officials speaking briefly, a mock trial directed by J. L. Big Springs Man Receives Combat Infantryman Badge
PFC Gary D. Thompson, 24, of Big Springs, was awarded the Combat Infantryman Badge in Vietnam for exemplary conduct under hostile fire. Thompson serves with the 101st Airborne Division, arrived overseas last July, and entered the Army in January 1964 after basic at Fort Leonard Wood. He is a 1958 Big Springs Rural High School graduate who previously worked for Pepsi Cola Bottling Co. in Alliance.
