Public Invited To VOD Contest In Sidney

The Voice of Democracy public speaking contest is set for Monday afternoon at 2 in the Sidney High School Auditorium. Six speakers will compete three from St Patrick's Academy and three from the high school with Bennie Hochmann as chair. The winner will receive a table model radio on display at Fox Theatre. Judges are Don Jorgenson Rae Jones Jack Ramm and Dr Lloyd O Halloran. The topic is I Speak For Democracy. The Jaycees annual project notes last year's winner Jack Frost who placed highly in state finals.

SOD Employees Donate 301 to Boy Scouts

The Windy Plains Boy Scout District received a $301 donation from the Sioux 4 Ordnance Depot Employee Contribution Fund per district finance officer Harold Katz. Dick Knudsen turned the funds over to the Wyo Braska Area Council, with the check presented by Col. E. W. Pennington for Col. A. L. Wood, commanding officer.

Second Youth Sent To Kearney In Rape Case

A Cheyenne County Juvenile Court judge ordered Tony Murillo, 17, sent to the Nebraska Boys Training School at Kearney for statutory rape and felonious assault with intent to commit rape in the alleged rape of a 14 year old girl near Sidney. A second youth earlier was sent to Kearney and a third awaits district court trial.

Water Spreading Project Completed In Lenzen Draw

The Soil Conservation District finished a water spreading project on Narjes Brothers leased school land one mile east of Sidney Airport. Two diversion dams and irrigation ditches will flood about 70 acres of Lenzen Draw pasture, spreading water four hours to two days. Similar systems already aid Lulu Evans Gundhart Olsen and Harry Anderson farms.

First Jury Will Get $30 000 Civil Case

The Chey gate County District Court opens a civil case Monday as the first on the docket. Minnie Dryer of Dalton sues Eugene Malm and Joe Vetchek for 30 000 claiming injuries from a Feb 4 1954 auto crash east of Dalton caused by dodging a flock of sheep. County Attorney Pat Heaton Jr notes no criminal jury cases are immediate.

Funeral set for Rex Wilcox hunter found in river

Funeral services for Rex Wilcox a 48 year old Sioux Ordnance Depot employee will be held at 2 pm tomorrow in Bridgeport. Officials say he died on a hunting trip from a heart attack possibly brought on by exhaustion. He was born in Alliance and lived in western Nebraska most of his life. Well Known Gurley Lady Dies at 81

Anna Weyerts, 81, longtime Gurley resident, died at her home after a summer illness. Funeral services will be held in Gurley with burial in Weyerts Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. She was born January 6, 1874 in Golden, Illinois, married Chris E. Weyerts in 1892, and is survived by five children, 18 grandchildren, and 18 great grandchildren.

Chambers No 1 well in Rudolph Field near Sidney shows potential

Oil company officials report that production casing has been run on the Chambers No 1 well in the Rudolph Field west of Sidney with a DST showing oil and sand at the D sand. The discovery is compared with Novotny's initial find, with new drilling and other nearby wells advancing in the Dorman Pool and McLennon exposures while several wildcat and dry holes are reported across the region.

Schlumberger May Buy Johnson Testers

Negotiations are under way for the sale of Johnson Testers Inc to Schlumberger Well Surveying Corp. The price is pegged at eight million dollars and the deal will be approved or rejected at a Johnson stockholders meeting. Johnson Testers specializes in drill stem tests while Schlumberger handles electric well logging. Both have offices in Sidney. If acquired, the unit would likely operate as a subsidiary.

Navy Recruiting Office Opens in Sidney Post Office

Opening of a permanent Navy recruiting office in Sidney was announced today by Petty Officer First Class George Edmondson. He will cover Cheyenne County and parts of Colorado and Nebraska. Edmondson is a veteran of Pearl Harbor, Tarawa, and the Korean War, with 14 years of service.

Death of George B. Allington After Suffocation

George B. Allington 50 longtime Sunol and Sidney resident died Tuesday night in his room at Glenwood Springs Colorado from suffocation caused by insufficient ventilation after turning up the heat. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the Craig Mortuary with Rev. C. Fred Parks officiating. Greenwood Cemetery burial with military honors. He served four years in the army with heavy artillery on the front in France and Germany. Mrs Iva Ogden Dies After Illness in Sioux City Area

Mrs Iva M. Ogden 47 died late Thursday at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital after an extended illness. Formerly of Ainsworth she lived at 1832 4th Street Sioux Villa with a niece and nephew. She leaves a son and daughter in Ainsworth. Funeral and burial plans are incomplete under The Craig Mortuary direction.

Theft Reported Of A Boxer Dog In Potter Parish

Roy Galbraith of Potter reported to the Cheyenne County sheriff's office this morning that a Boxer dog was stolen. The brief notice notes the incident as a theft with no further details on the dog or suspect information.
