Sidney Community Improvement program to be honored in Lincoln

The Sidney Community Improvement program will have its annual awards banquet in Lincoln tonight where the success and finalists in Class V will be announced. Sidney has finalist status for the second consecutive year joining Lexington Bellevue North Platte McCook and Seward in the category for cities with 5,600 to 50,000 population. Mrs Kay Fix chairs the local drive en route to the banquet and Rev Tom Ryan hopes to attend despite recent transfer to Grand Island last summer.

Ballots Mailed for Cheyenne County Chamber Directors

Ballots are being mailed this weekend to members of the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce for the election of two directors from an eight nominee slate. Nominees include Ed Bauman Phil Curtiss Rodney Hinman Ken Moncrief Raoul Nelson Harold Powers and Lew Wilson. Chamber Manager Ed Cole urged members to mark and return ballots promptly as changes are anticipated in the area.

Sidney flood area must stand for HUD program rules

A Nebraska flood engineer told Sidney officials that the city cannot base a Federal flood map revision on a 50-year flood.HUD participation requires a 100-year flood basis with maps derived from records and a possible two-foot water level drop would not change the 100-year concept. Officials prepare application for the national flood insurance program, including a Corps study, building codes, and zoning maps.

Post Office initiates central mark up plan

The Sidney Post Office launches central mark up to route misaddressed mail to a central desk where correction labels are prepared then sent onward. Changes of address should be filed with the Post Office and notify correspondents. The system delays misaddressed mail by 24 hours. Beginning Sunday postage due mail will be returned to sender or filed in the dead letter office. stamp fraud costs are cited at national level.

Pleasant autumn weather plans weekend in Nebraska

The Associated Press reports pleasant mid autumn weather across Nebraska through the weekend with a warming trend and mostly partly cloudy skies. No precipitation expected. temperatures dip to a state low of 17 at North Platte, highs in the upper 40s to lower 30s by Saturday. A weak frontal system moved through Idaho and Wyoming with little Nebraska impact, tracking southeast toward Colorado and New Mexico.

Youth agencies meet to coordinate services

Representatives of several local agencies and schools met today in Cheyenne County to coordinate youth related services. Bill Plank, director of Mental Health Service's children’s program in Sidney, said the aim is to connect agencies and improve referrals. Invitations reached schools, churches, welfare, probation, police, courts, Educational Service Unit 14, Head Start, Day Care, Community Action, VISTA, and other groups. the session was held at the Cheyenne County Court House.

I 80 sculpture project gets $100 000 grant

The Nebraska American Revolution Bicentennial Commission approved 112000 in matching funds to four groups including a 100000 grant for the I 80 Bicentennial Sculpture Project. Twelve sculptures will be created by artists living in 12 adjoining communities with a 450 mile unveiling plan on July 4, 1976.

Rural non farm development limits debated by county planners

Cheyenne County planners heard Greeley consultant Bob Britzman present two rural residential land use concepts to guide the county comprehensive plan. Concept A allows 16 lots per square mile with 40 acre non farm lots and 1 acre minimums within half mile of farms. Concept B allows eight lots per section with 60 acre ag buffers. The concepts aim to preserve rural appearance while permitting limited growth and require agricultural zoning. Other topics included road access standards and flood hazard mapping.
