Reading Increase at Sidney Public Library Noted
Reading has risen nearly 50 percent in the children's department since the Joplin Reading Plan began in local schools two and a half years ago. Librarian Nellie Niemeller notes gains across fourth to junior high readers as fiction remains popular and non fiction attracts more research use. New children's books, including Heavyweight Champions Durant and The Spooky Thing Steele, arrive during National Children's Book Week. Adults read 8 books on average per four weeks, with historical novels and detective stories popular among teens and many new adult titles added to shelves.
