Corn Harvest Prospers In Nebraska Panhandle Despite Winds
Oshkosh reports one of the largest corn crops in years with yields up to 150 bushels per acre. Much of the crop blew down in recent windstorms and is being handpicked. Merle and Dennis Miller operate two four row pickers east of Lewellen for field work. Trucks haul shelled corn to Lewellen elevators mirroring wheat harvest activity. In Kimball Ralph Spearow buys the Huffie Fence Cleaner from Curley’s Machine Works to automate fence cleaning. He raises certified wheat seed and black Angus cattle and notes the device replaces most hand labor. Spearow mounts it on a wheatland tractor to service 12 miles of fencing, with sales expanding to Sioux Army Depot and Wyoming’s Department of Roads.
