Uncle Sam Can't Pay For All Retired Land
Washington farmers offered to retire over 20 million acres in 1959 under the soil bank program, far exceeding the government's 214 million acre goal. Rental payments would total 418 million dollars, while only 285 million is available, forcing a priority system to select which land is accepted. Maximum rents rise to about 13.50 dollars per acre from 10. Congress did not provide an extra 175 million dollars requested by Secretary Benson.
