Burke and Cochran spearheaded a Democratic sweep across state and national races Tuesday, continuing Cheyenne county’s shift from Republican to Democratic. Burke won the U S Senate race, Cochran edged Griswold for governor, and Coffee led in Congress. Green held state senate seat. Sullivan lost for state representative.
Mrs. H. C. Anderson died Tuesday evening at Sidney residence of her daughter Mrs. Eugene Davis after seven weeks illness. Born in Denmark, she arrived in Cheyenne county with her husband in 1883, settled two miles north of Huntsman, retired to Sidney 14 years ago, and leaves two surviving children Mrs. Davis and A. K. Anderson plus four grandchildren. Funeral service Saturday at Trinity Lutheran church at 2 30 p m with interment at Sidney Greenwood Cemetery.
Two new electrical neon signs have been installed downtown to brighten the area at night. One rises in front of the West hotel on Illinois street, visible for blocks, while the other, a large sign before the Commercial hotel, enhances illumination on Tenth avenue.
Cheyenne County treasurer’s office now stores the new 1935 plates after receipt. Plates will go on sale December 20 and the county received several hundred pounds of the slate gray back plates with black numerals in the usual style.
The Alliance junior chamber will host the 1935 state convention of junior chambers of commerce in Nebraska. The designation as next convention city was announced at this year’s convention in Omaha, where a delegation from the Alliance junior chamber attended.
County commissioners selected jurors for the upcoming district court term. The list includes Bronson Arvin Livingston, Joe McMillen, and others by precincts such as Bunker Hill, Chambers, Eagle, Lorenzo, Pleasant View, No. 1, and Trognitz.
Western Nebraska doctors and dentists plan their annual clinical assembly in Sidney on Monday and Tuesday. Dr. R E Roche leads arrangements with Dr. L A Donahoe organizing local plans for dentists. About one hundred professionals are expected, many bringing spouses. Notable speakers are scheduled and motion pictures on medical advances will be shown. A joint session precedes the annual banquet Monday evening.
Cheyenne county set an all time voting record with more than 4000 ballots cast Tuesday. The heavy turnout puzzled observers while poll books across 17 precincts confirmed the surge. Counting extended into daylight as Sidney No. 2 reported 900 votes, Davison leading first at about 10:30 p.m.
The county announced sealed bids will be received until 1 p m Tuesday November 13 for Rock Springs nut and egg coal semi lignite lump coal delivery in car lots to the track at Sidney. Commissioners will open bids and award a contract. The district court clerk was instructed to collect all past due fees by December 1 due to a large amount of earned suit fees unpaid by party litigants.
James B. Roe rector of Christ Episcopal church announces that Sidney will host Right Rev. John Boyd Bentley suffragant bishop of Alaska next Thursday November 15. A women’s conference at 3 p.m. a supper at 6 30 and a mission mass meeting at 8 p.m. are planned as part of a church tour across 380 centers in 83 dioceses to share the Alaska church work and the general convention spirit.
Dr. L Van Ess, famed livestock disease authority, tops western Nebraska organized agriculture meetings November 19 to 24 at six sites led by Sidney on November 20. Mrs Earl Hornbeck of Winchester Ill addresses farm women alongside Van Ess. Other speakers include Tom Wilson of Pueblo Colo CC W Watkins directs shelter belt program. P H Stewart on seed stocks and W W Derrick on cattle buying. Angeline Anderson discusses adolescence. Prof H C Filley, Mrs N W Gaines and a farm credit rep speak at the general session. Talks run 10 a m to 4 p m with a 6 p m farm-fun feed.
A tremendous crowd attended the opening night of the Altar Society supper and bazaar at the academy, with seats filling quickly after six. Officials believed the two day attendance could set an all time record as another large crowd gathered for the second night.
Lawrence Beeken, 13, of Lodge Pole, was operated on at Taylor hospital for a fractured skull after being thrown from a horse earlier Tuesday. Initial fears were for his life, but his condition improved to satisfactory with full recovery possible.
Sidney Post No. 17 of the American Legion will observe Armistice Day with a morning program at 10 45 featuring Attorney James G McIntosh and a noon army dinner for all ex service men. An evening fight and dance card completes the holiday schedule. no parade due to lack of a band and interference with Kimball football.
The American Legion boxing committee lists tickets for a 28 round card at the city auditorium Monday night. Reserved seats cost 1.10 and general admission 85 cents. Main event features Eddie Anderson versus Fay Clark in a ten round bout with a semi final of Beal versus Langford. Support bouts include Bill Thompson versus Tony Chick and Beryl Collier versus Flo Contratto. Tickets are sold at Sidney Drug and Joe Simodynes, with likely sellout signals.
The Fox theatre will host a midnight preview of Mae West in Belle of the 90s on Saturday at 11 30 p m aimed at night owls. The film is praised for Mae Wests wit and sprightly humor and considered superior to previous West pictures.
The last emergency drought cattle sale was held in Sidney on Wednesday disposing of 255 head of inferior stock. The sale ends a Cheyenne county series removing about 1400 head from farms to ease a severe feed shortage still affecting many areas.
Sidney’s unbeaten football team returns from a ten day rest to face Kimball Monday afternoon in Armistice day grid action. Coach Leo Black seeks full strength against an underperforming Kimball, wary of overconfidence, with the Maroons aiming to stay undefeated.
Sidney stores plan an all day closure Monday November 12 after a Telegraph survey. Greenlees C A West and J C Penney announced the move early Tuesday and Cressey’s shoe store will observe the two day holiday. Most grocers also plan closure though some departments will stay open.
The arrival of turkey dressing season has given about 20 people employment at the Omaha Cold Storage company plant here and an additional 20 probably will be put on as soon as the marketing becomes heavier. The plan is a unit in 2 system said to be the largest in the middlewest and at this time of year the company specializes in turkeys. The Sidney plant is prepared to handle all the turkeys ready for market in the territory and is paying the highest prevailing cash prices for them. The local plant expects to ship out several car loads of poultry this fall.
The Woman's Club held its semi monthly session Tuesday afternoon in the club rooms with Mrs R Nelson and Mrs R V Francis as hostesses. Mrs J W Johnson read a paper on Our United States and Its National Ideals. Roll call led by Mrs J T McIntosh prompted responses on fascinating personalities. Mrs Charles Gardner organized entertainment and presented Rose Marie Pavlat with accompaniment by Mrs William Burgess.
Rehearsals are under way for Casey's Trial a two act farce presented by the American Legion auxiliary drill team at the city auditorium next Thursday night November 15. More than 100 locals are drilling and previews show a sprightly show with humor and musical numbers. Proceeds fund drill team uniforms and convention expenses. Advance tickets 35 cents at five o clock day of performance 40 cents at door. Children's tickets ten cents. The full cast will be listed in Telegraph News next Tuesday.
The Telegraph News will not be issued until Tuesday or later due to the Armistice holiday. Sidney stores plan to close so publication is delayed from Monday night to Tuesday, allowing newspaper staff a two day vacation. Expect the paper several hours later than usual.
Two Lund business properties suffered robberies overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday. Sheriff Schulz reported few clues as to suspects. one case involved the Hill filling station losing about 20 gallons of gasoline with no other items taken.
Sidney war veterans are invited to Gurley for a free army feed at noon Saturday by Weyerts post of the American Legion. The post plans a patriotic observance and expects a large crowd from Sidney, with preparations underway for a lively gathering.
