Sidney street crews plan faster snow removal with two hydraulic plows replacing the road grader. Street superintendent Mel Jackson says the plows angle left or right to clear arterials, hills, and collectors first, with added city staff backing up the four man department during storms.
About 20 downtown Sidney merchants formed the Better Downtown Sidney Association to promote downtown commerce and counter rumors of a split in the Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce. The six member board includes Ron Risenhoover and managers from Newberrys, Hogeland’s, Montgomery Ward, Penneys, Greenlee’s, and McDonalds.
Cheyenne County offices city county and state will be closed Monday for Veterans Day. City Clerk Gordon Tobin said the City Council meeting moves to 7 30 p m Tuesday at City Hall. County and state offices in the Cheyenne County Court House and Annex close all day. The Sidney Post Office remains open. The Sidney Telegraph publishes as usual. Nov 11 is the state observance. the federal government marks the fourth Monday in October.
In Nebraska 3rd District, NES restarts a statewide vote recheck including absentee and disabled ballots. With all precincts reported, Haven Smith leads Wayne Ziebarth 78,222 to 77,399, but final tallies await absentee counts across counties, possibly ending next week. Additional races in play include Regents and State Board contests.
The Cheyenne County Housing Association reduced membership dues from 200 to 100 dollars to attract more members for a rental housing project in Sidney. The nonprofit plans 50 year FHA loans, 3 percent interest, and 750000 dollar project limits, with rents expected around 140 to 165 dollars. Officers were elected and the first annual meeting set for November 19 in City Hall.
Crown and root rot and winter kill potential loom for Cheyenne County 1975 winter wheat due to moisture shortage. County extension agent Ken Sakurada warns dry soil and freezing temps can trigger disease while wheat grows on favorable fall conditions. October precipitation was sparse, with 0.07 inches in the last three days and total monthly rainfall far below averages.
Dennis C Lessig, formerly head of Permits and Enforcement, is appointed Chief of the Water Pollution Control Division at the Nebraska Department of Environmental Control. He succeeds R Benson who leaves for Consolidated Engineers and Architects of Omaha. Lessig, a Gurley native and UNL zoology graduate with a focus on water pollution and lake eutrophication, will oversee planning, monitoring, permits, enforcement, lab work, engineering and training from the Norfolk office.
Cheyenne County commissioners approved the sale of a parcel part of Lot 15 Clarkson Addition to Sidney and adopted several resolutions at their post-election session Wednesday November 6. Jerry's Tree Service Inc. Bill Fobair and John Hoehne of the Panhandle Resources Council reviewed the council's quarterly report with the commission.
Clark Fuller discusses his book Pioneer Paths in a November issue of Western Outlook Magazine, with sketches to evoke Nebraska history for Cheyenne County readers. The Sidney Telegraph notes editor Ed Sykes reported the feature and a resumed Wake Up series exploring drug movement and abuse in Western Nebraska.
Employers and businessmen from seven southern Panhandle communities joined a seminar on unemployment insurance in Sidney. Five Department of Labor personnel from Lincoln and Scottsbluff covered topics from program history to fund status, definitions, payments, fraud, and new legislation. The Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce sponsored the event at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel with attendees from Chappell Dalton Kimball Lodgepole Potter Sidney and Sunol.
