The Sidney Chamber of Commerce will lead a regional drive to win Army and Pentagon support to keep Sioux Ordnance Depot as a major defense installation. A delegation may travel to Washington early next year, with Gov. Anderson and other state leaders targeted to back the effort. Depot layoffs are looming, with about 82 workers to be cut by December 1, as the plant’s payroll shrinks from wartime highs to roughly 700.

Veterans Day Programs Are Planned Here
Veterans Day events colorful across Cheyenne County and Sidney trade area. In Sidney a Saturday dance at the National Guard Armory, with Clancy Stout orchestra, honors veterans as part of the day. Monday the American Legion Auxiliary serves free coffee and rolls 9:30 to 11 at city auditorium basement. A bean feed at 5:45 p.m. at the VFW post home offers ham and beans free to veterans. Other communities hold programs with speakers from The American Legion and local leaders.

Kimball Driver Hurt In Wednesday Mishap
A 34 year old Kimball motorist named Lloyd Hanes suffered possible chest injuries in a one car crash four miles north of Potter on a Cheyenne County road late Wednesday afternoon. Safety Patrolman Del Shipley reported Hanes was southbound in a 1956 car when he tailgated a large truck, lost control, veered into the left ditch and rolled over twice. The vehicle was a total loss.

Tragic Sidney Farm Fire Claims Last Victim
The fifth and final victim of the Sidney farm home fire died in Omaha Hospital from heart strain linked to burns. Pauline Kittleman, 46, widow of George Kittleman, died after an August blaze killed her husband, their infant twin daughters, and a teenage stepson. Funeral services set for Monday. burial in Greenwood Cemetery. Survivors listed include four children from a former marriage and several siblings. George Kittleman and children perished in the blaze when a kerosene or gasoline spill near an old stove caused an explosion. Weather: partly cloudy with a cool spell continuing tonight and tomorrow, low 20s to 25, high near 40.

Power District Explores Electric Home Heating Use
Wheatbelt Public Power District plans to study electric heating in its service area. District manager Charles Ham toured eight Iowa homes, six new and two old, all with electric heat. He believes properly installed electric heat is competitive with other heating forms. A Deuel County schoolhouse will get an electric system, with another installation planned this winter to gain field experience. A tentative rate for electric heating was outlined.

Summer Fallow Provision In Soil Bank Rules 1958

Leo Krieger Named Kiwanis Club Head
Leo Krieger was elected president of Sidney Kiwanis Club at the Wednesday meeting. Arlo Jones was chosen vice president. Directors include T. R. Baker conducted the election and welcomed new member Lee Sluman of International Harvester Company for 25 years. The group then attended an audition of 44 Stars of Tomorrow contestants at Central School. A final audition date was set for Wednesday November 13 at 7 p.m. in the Yendis Cafe for those unable to attend the first audition.
