Cheyenne County wheat growers submit more than forty five samples for the Nebraska wheat show in Hastings. An education program includes a Junior Division Crop Judging Contest for 4 H Clubs and EFA members at 10:00 am. The afternoon program features talks by J C Russell L P Reitz and J O Hibbard plus music from Hastings College. The Nebraska Wheat Show in Hastings will feature Prof. J. C. Russell of the University of Nebraska and Dr. F. I. Daley discussing drought strategies for wheat. Wheat judging for western central and eastern Nebraska occurs in the morning with a champion to be named. a junior crops judging contest will run concurrently with 4-H and FFA participants from across the state expected.
Postmaster John W. Martinosky reports about a twenty percent monthly rise in mail business this year in Sidney as housing grows. Starting November 1 delivery extended to 21st Avenue south of Newton Street with more city expansions expected as new routes are planned and sidewalks and street improvements are completed.
The state and federal crop reporting service reported 80,932,000 bushels of wheat in all positions in Nebraska on October 1, up 66 percent from 48,738,000 a year earlier due to the bumper 1952 crop. Farm stocks total 46,738,000 bushels, with rye at 265,000 off farm. farm stocks 671,000. The report notes rye production has declined for years despite steady yields.
Korean War casualty listing notes Sgt. Raymond M. Clark of Chappell as wounded. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Earl M Clark. The report places Clark among wounded service members from the conflict.
Chicago Corp plans a new well on the John Elsasser property in the North Sidney oil field starting within days. Louisiana Natural Gas Co is completing an Elsasser well on a farmout from Roberts Brothers of Shreveport, with six wells already producing. The Chicago location is 330 feet from the section line, offsetting a producer drilled recently by Louisiana Natural Gas. A prior D sand stem test at Sell No. 1 southeast of Gurley yielded 250 feet of pipeline oil and 300 feet of salt water.
Chicago Corp drilled west of Hart No 1 and recovered 1 210 feet of clean oil in a drill stem test at Hart No 1 area. The test from 4 019 to 4 034 feet covered the top fifteen feet of a thirty three foot sand. another test was planned. Land owner is Mrs Carl Schlumberger of Fremont.
Mud and water hinder the D sand tests as Schlumberger No. 1 Morrill County well shows no oil saturation. Hart No.1 remains the neighbor with no D sand oil. Elsasser at North Sidney yields good oil. 4,690 to 4,724 feet DST recovers 1860 feet oil, 90 mud, 30 mud. Witter No.1 in West Sidney nears D sand. Bill Fanning ranch to host Scotts Bluff County’s first oil well test in months. Stout Oil Co. of Denver to drill for Woodward Oil Co. on the Fanning lease.
The women's division of the Sidney Cheyenne County community hospital subscription campaign nears completion with Mrs J Fred Thompson as general chair. The men’s division forms soon and a kickoff luncheon is planned for November 12. Team captains and bases are named with eight captains selecting ten workers each. An advance gifts drive has raised over 100000 dollars from more than four thousand prospective donors. Ira Steward expects an intensive final push to ensure a large fully-equipped community hospital for the county.
The Kozy Court motel at 2220 Illinois is sold to Mr. and Mrs. Lee M. Short of McAllen Texas effective November 15. The previous owners Mr. and Mrs. Malcolm Anderson designed built the Kozy Court and announced no definite plans for its future.
Phil McMullen and Carl Lovell of the Cheyenne County Soil Conservation district report many farmers neglect planted trees last spring leading to poor survival. Some farms like Leonard Beyers and Muriel Crosby show thriving trees with proper cultivation. The district offers trees and planting service at six cents per tree for cooperators with windbreak and shelter belt plantings urged to order now for spring delivery. A variety of species including Chinese elms locust pine cedar fruit trees shrubs Catoneaster are available.
An estimated one thousand persons attended the Reformation Day Services Friday evening in the Sidney City Auditorium under the United Lutheran Churches of Northeastern Colorado and Western Nebraska. The event featured a 200-voice choir directed by Mrs Hjalmer Carlson and a sermon by Dr Charles B Foelsch, first president of Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary. Ministers praised attendance and the program, calling it a first in the area likely to inspire similar events in the future.
Rites were conducted Monday afternoon for Lenora Myrtle Sewald infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Peter Sewald of Sioux Ordnance Depot who died shortly after birth on Saturday November 1. The funeral was at 3 o clock at St Patrick Catholic Church with Rev Fr Albert Albel in charge. Burial followed at Greenwood Cemetery.
County Superintendent Irma Grosshans rejected a petition to merge Kimball District 17 with Potter district after a joint hearing with Cheyenne County. The decision cited state law granting sign or refusal power and questioned petition signatures from residents Claudio Aaragon and Delton Meyer as factors.
Election watchers predicted Cheyenne County would exceed five thousand votes in today’s election. Sidney and Cheyenne County expected to help set a state turnout record as a Chamber of Commerce backed get out the vote effort aims to boost participation. Polls open eight and close eight. the prewar record was 623,718 in 1940.
Nebraska voters are forecast a mild and dry election day with no rain in the five day outlook. Temperatures should run five to eight degrees above normal though some cloudiness possible. Observers say weather should be favorable for voting, and rain unlikely to deter farmers from heading to the polls.
