City issued 29 permits totaling 1 024 058 led by the South 11th Street low rent project and an American National Bank expansion. Sidney’s 1976 total reaches 2 117 502, only the second time above 2 million since 1955.
Cheyenne County voters backed Ford for president 56 percent to Carter 42 percent with 2,230 to 1,656. McCollister won the US House race 2,074 to 1,563 while Zorinsky carried the Senate in Omaha. Virginia Smith swept all county precincts in the congressional contest.
Incumbent Dr. D. J. Garcia and Rex Swanson win seats on the Sidney City Council with 1,669 and 1,327 votes respectively, while Edward Bauman trails with 1,028. O'Halloran leads the Board of Education race with 1,458 votes in a field of six. Narjes retains Cheyenne County Commissioner post. multiple local races fill regional boards and authorities.
Sidney held a swine flu inoculation clinic at Memorial Hospital drawing 2 959 people, the largest in the Panhandle to date. Norma Otero called the turnout fantastic and noted Alliance fell short with 1 735 attendees while Chadron had 2 587 at a previous high. Kimball and Chappell clinics were listed with Chappell from 7 to 9 p.m. at Miller Memorial.
Chappell Nebraska reports the first southern Panhandle solar heating unit in operation on Gary and Gary Bruns farm four miles east and one and a half miles north of Chappell. An A frame houses 45000 pounds of river gravel as a storage battery with polyurethane insulation. The system, built by Sun up Sun Furnace, is designed to supply about 90 percent of the home’s heating needs and costs around 5000 dollars.
Nebraska voters favored Ford over Carter by 59 to 39 percent while sending Omaha Democrat Edward Zorinsky to the Senate and Democrat John Cavanaugh to the U S House. Republicans Smith and Thone were reelected, and multiple unicameral races produced several party-flip or upset outcomes amid a mixed statewide result.
President elect Jimmy Carter defeats Gerald Ford with 272 electoral votes after Wisconsin puts him over the top. Carter carries 23 states to Ford’s 24, with popular totals around 36.5 million to 34.5 million as Ford concedes and offers a smooth transition. Carter praises Ford as a formidable opponent and a good man.
