The Nebraska Department of Roads plans lighting for the Sidney east Interstate 80 interchange this fiscal year. A $72 million state plan approved by the State Highway Commission includes the project with four light poles likely in four quadrants. Utilities would connect to Wheatbelt Public Power District lines until city service is provided.
State Auditor Ray AC Johnson of Lincoln announced plans to run as a Republican for the US Senate. The 54 year old veteran auditor said a formal declaration would come later this month and voiced optimism about defeating Gov James Exon in the general election.
Don Shasteen, administrative assistant to Senator Carl Curtis, predicts Congress will approve exempting gasohol from the four cent per gallon federal tax. He cited momentum from a Senate vote and pressed House support at a 19 state gasohol convention in Lincoln, urging bipartisan cooperation and rapid expansion of gasohol plants.
The Justice Department says Congress may extend the state approval window for the Equal Rights Amendment from seven to fourteen years. States that already ratified cannot rescind their approval. Opponents, including Phyllis Schlafly, criticize the ruling as changing rules midgame.
Washington lawmakers debate who pays higher Social Security taxes as the Senate eyes a bill favoring employers while the House approved a plan to share the tax burden equally. Senator Robert Dole planned to propose the House provision on the Senate floor.
Kimball Irrigation District voices irritation over the Oliver project appraisal. President Vic Ebel says the land valuation insults the district, intends to hire an attorney to pursue disposal of land and dissolution, while NRD officials report mixed responses from two other landowners and plan to counter next steps. Republican candidate Vance Rogers spoke at the Fort Sidney Motor Hotel to a group of local officials and professionals about town hall meetings across western Nebraska and a governor's conference of mayors. He stressed administrator experience from NWU and outlined post primary focus on agriculture taxes energy water and education. He pledged no dirty tricks and said he plans to win.
The Nebraska-Wyoming Wheat Growers Association plans its annual convention November 14 and 15 at the Scottsbluff Inn. Speakers include Roger Sandman and Clifford Cuse with panels on farm programs and foreign markets. US Rep. Virginia Smith and Sen. Edward Zorin sky are scheduled, with the Nebraska Wheat Queen to be crowned at the banquet.

Approval for action comes from local Civil Defense or mayor then the governor through state channels.
Mrs Marian Lenzen says she apologized to Howard Hart assistant U S secretary of agriculture for rude treatment at the WIFE convention on behalf of the WIFE organization. She denies reports of her defeat or reelection and notes she was a duly elected spokeswoman authorized to speak.
Betty Majors national president of Women Involved in Farm Economics says Sidney Nebraska remains the WIFE headquarters despite a bylaw revision removing the Sidney clause. She notes she planned to read a motion establishing Sidney as headquarters but was unable to, and she does not intend to move the headquarters.
Rollie Schilz quits as Potter superintendent effective January 13 at the board of education's request. He admits purchasing $2000 in electronics for personal use without prior approval, paid for, and says auditors were informed. He plans no immediate post leaving steps and has led the district for six years.
