State Wheat Show Opens Thursday in Sidney

The Nebraska Wheat Show opens Thursday November 2 in Sidney with grain experts, panel discussions, tours, and a large machinery display. Governors, university and industry leaders attend, with junior contests awarding nearly 500 dollars in prizes and a trip to Omaha for top teams.

Colorado Lass Named County Home Agent for Cheyenne

Miss Pat Dunham, a June 1967 Colorado State University graduate in food science and nutrition, is hired as Cheyenne County home agent. She will start around December 1, train in Lincoln and Pallalla, and work from the Cheyenne County Extension Service office.

Golden Gift Deadline Announced for Sidney Merchants

John Storkel, chairman of Golden Gift Day, says Thursday noon is the deadline for Sidney merchants to join the second round of the Christmas promotion. Merchants not reached should call the Chamber of Commerce before noon. Response so far exceeds last year, with weekly top prizes planned. Last year’s prizes included a freezer, color TV, portable TV, recliner chair, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, and more.

College Night Program Set Monday at Sidney High School

High school juniors and seniors will meet 19 colleges and universities at the 16th annual College Night at Sidney High School Monday November 6 starting at 7 p m. Students from Oshkosh Big Springs Chappell Lodgepole Lorenzo and Gurley will attend along with parents.

Frontier Boards 174 In October

Frontier Airlines boarding in Sidney dropped to 174 in October from September's all time high of 234 loaded. Manager Dale Kindred reported 130 boardings a year ago, with a 44 passenger increase this October. Most tickets were sold in the first half of the month as over 100 residents departed Sidney by air.

United Fund Office To Close Early On Friday

High Plains Lab Praised by University Station Head

Charlie Fenster head of University of Nebraska Scottsbluff Station spoke at Cheyenne County Wheat Growers meeting in Sidney Monday night outlining the High Plains Agricultural Laboratory aims. He said the facility will focus on soil and water conservation and provide region-specific agronomic solutions reflecting wide environmental variation across elevations rainfall and growing seasons. Local farmers called the Sidney station a real asset and essential for practical farm answers.

The Panhandle forecast calls for increased cloudiness this afternoon with occasional rain. Expect showers turning to snow flurries this afternoon and Thursday, with southwest winds 10 to 20 mph shifting to northerly this evening. Lows tonight 20 to 30, highs Thursday 40 to 50. Precip probability 5 percent today, 80 percent tonight, 50 percent Thursday. Five day outlook shows temperatures Thursday to Monday about nine degrees below normal, with a weekend warming trend. highs in the 40s, lows 15 to 20, little to no precipitation.

Street closure for Nebraska State Wheat Show display

Sidney police say one block of 11th from Illinois to Jackson will be closed all day Thursday November 2 to host the Nebraska State Wheat Show equipment display. Traffic will be diverted and parking discouraged on that street. motorists should use alternate routes for tomorrow only.

NFO Rally Tonight in Cheyenne County Armory

The National Farmers Organization holds a rally and informational meeting tonight at 7:01 p.m. at the National Guard Armory in Legion Park Cheyenne County. Expected attendance ranges from 800 to 1,000 with Erhart Pfingston as featured speaker and Frank Jones as master of ceremonies.

Wheat Growers Elect Officers and Back Farm Unions

Phil Curtis of Sidney was elected president of the Cheyenne County Wheat Growers at a Monday night meeting in Sidney. Louis Schmale vice president and Elmer Nagengast secretary treasurer were also chosen. The group urged support for National Farmers Organization and passed resolutions favoring farm groups and protective legislation similar to Wagner Act style labor laws. Curtis urged county farmers to join in expanding markets for U.S. wheat, noting Wheat Growers’ role in increasing exports and urging a united front for Nebraska farmers through the Nebraska Farm Council.

Burglary Check Is Being Made At Fix Pharmacy

Early Tuesday a brick shattered the Fix Pharmacy front window in the Jones Center causing about 100 dollars in glass damage. Comic books and candy bars disappeared. a fourteen year old Sidney youth is a suspect with no charges filed. Police also investigated a possible theft of a pony cart from 643 Olinois, blue with rubber tires and reflectors on mud flaps.
