Oil-Gas News: Cheyenne County Drilling Advances and Abandonments

Seven rigs operate as two new oil wells add to Cheyenne County totals in northwestern fields. McNish No 1 and Nickell No 2 report casing and test data, while two wells are abandoned and three drillers approach the D sand zones. Kimball and Banner counties see fresh producers and more dry holes as Pan American and other firms pace operations amid clear roads.

McMillen Elected Nebraska Vice President of Oil Group

Robert McMillen head of Ohio Oil Co. Sidney district was chosen vice-president for Nebraska of the Rocky Mountain Oil and Gas Association at the association’s annual Denver convention late last week.

Mort and Kreader Discuss Two-Price Wheat Plan

Nebraskans Lester Mort of Venango and Mannie Kreader of Dalton told the Nebraska Congressional breakfast that they discussed a two price plan with the Department of Agriculture. They do not expect action soon. The plan would pay a higher domestic price for wheat used domestically than for export.

Graduates Are Honored at Sidney Commencement

Twenty six Sidney seniors received scholarships and honors at commencement exercises this week. Betty Nissen led as valedictorian winning multiple awards including a $100 Elks scholarship and a $50 Oberfelder Award. Rodney Moore, Jan Burr, Harriet Taylor, and others earned Regents Scholarships and various regional and local honors.

Memorial Day Floral Beauty Brightens Sid ney's Cemetery

Sid ney's Memorial Day observance featured hundreds of floral tributes at Greenwood Cemetery with lilacs and tulips decorating nearly every grave. Weather was mild with a gusty wind and light rain in the evening while the Sidney park drew picnickers all day. RF McNamara Sioux Ordnance Depot inspector-general gave the address, stressing sacrifice and continued pursuit of peace, as the veterans parade and school band proceeded through the business district. L M Clinton led ceremonies as master of ceremonies with wreaths placed on the Unknown Soldier grave by Tom Lenzen.

Forgers Given Prison Terms in Cheyenne County

Clarence Baldwin 55 received three years in the Nebraska State Penitentiary after pleading guilty to signing and passing a $27.50 forged check in Sidney on May 13. Floyd Srader 40 drew a one year term after admitting to forging a $128.05 check on an Oklahoma bank in Cheyenne County on April 27, 1955.

Big Oil Firms Accused of Price Fixing in Nebraska

Senator Monroe Bixler of Harrison charged that major oil companies manipulate prices across Nebraska to pressure the legislature against a proposed one cent per gallon gasoline tax. He urged readiness for local pressure and planned a Monday resolution for a legislative council investigation into marketing practices. Senator Terry Carpenter supported the claim, saying independents cannot set prices freely and that major firms push prices for quick summer profits.

Game Of Car Tag Ends With Fines In Sidney

Three Sidney youths faced Police Judge Glen Greenlee for playing automobile tag on the north side. Arnold Braasch 17 and Gerald Larson 16 were fined 35 dollars plus costs, Larry Busboom 16 was fined 25 dollars plus costs. Also three drivers were fined 25 dollars and costs for speeding: Dick Green 23 Jack Rofenacht 18 both of Sidney and Gerald Vossberg 18 of Route 1 Sidney.

Bids On Ordville Roof Project Told

A Newcastle Wyoming firm Johansen & Carhis Construction Co. submitted the apparent low bid of 170 789 for reroofing Ordville housing units. Other low bids were Nienhueser & Weber 184 208.68 and Fricke Construction Co. 188 500 from Alliance. Ten bidders participated and no start date is set.

Sidney Hosts Original Gold Brick Swindle Exhibit

The Cheyenne County Historical Museum in Sidney presents June 17 to 22 an exhibit on the Hoodoo Brick the original gold brick swindle with brass shavings melted glass and a paperweight gift from Gordon Tobin. One brick remains in the Janda Tobin Drug Store building and is labeled Hoodoo Brick. The story behind the 1870 confidence game notes Sidney as its birthplace and lore.

Lake Storage Doubled Since October At Lake McConaughy

Storage at Lake McConaughy rose to 810 000 acre feet with inflows near 3000 cubic feet per second as Kingsley Dam outlet remains closed since April 8. Analysts note winter gains from 383 000 to 810 000 acre feet and foresee potential peak near last year’s 913 600 acre feet if favorable weather continues.

Intermittent Precipitation Sweeps Nebraska Panhandle

Rain covered the Nebraska Panhandle with heavy showers in Dalton and north toward the North Platte River. The wheat crop shows unprecedented growth, requiring moisture and sun to reach harvest. Kimball faced four inches of rain and flooded underpasses on Highway 29 and mud on Highway 30, with no major damage reported in Potter or Bushnell.

Reservations Sought for Sidney Chamber Meeting at SOD

Sidney Chamber of Commerce seeks reservations for the quarterly meeting at Sioux Ordnance Depot next Thursday evening. Mr. Sigler said reservations must be made by Monday. The program includes a briefing by Waldo Deering and a new Army guided missiles film.
