Old Soldiers Well Honored Memorial Service

A Civil War veterans memorial service filled the Sidney opera house with Home Guards in blue and the old soldiers in khaki. Rev J J Langston, a southern native, delivered a clear address on war’s impact, praising the flag for Southern unity and urging reconciliation as “poor whites” found work and revival after the conflict.

Cheyenne County Leads in District War Funds Push

Mrs H L Scroggin district chairman praises Cheyenne County for leading District 1 in War Fund efforts. She returns duplicate bills as the government requires. W P Miles reports returning from an eastern state trip and visiting daughter Mrs Raymond Bauer.

Graduation Night at Sidney High School Opera House

The Sidney High School class of 1917 held its May 28 graduation at the opera house with 17 graduates. Highlights included a student recital led by Professor D. J. Lewis, valedictory by Raymond Clinton, salutatory by Beulah Grabill, and Dean Butterworth’s address. Mary McIntosh won valedictorian and a scholarship, with Beulah Grabill and Martha Cunningham earning honors.

Registration Notice for the June 5 1918 US Muster

The notice directs all men age 21 plus residing in the United States to register by June 5 1918 except military personnel. It lists Cheyenne County registration sites in Lodgepole Sunol Potter Dalton Gurney and Sidney with local registrars and instructions for absent sick or traveling registrants. It warns of a misdemeanor penalty up to one year and urges early registration at a local board in Sidney Nebraska.

Lester Vath promised to present a fine silk flag to the Boy Scouts after a morning drill led by Scoutmaster D. J. Lewis. His quick order down town ensured the lads will soon march under their own colors. Also notes for local sale items and services.

Decoration Day Observed With Parade and Address

Soldiers graves were solemnly decked as Decoration Day was observed with a morning parade led by the Sidney band and Home Guards. At 2 pm the opera house hosted a program by Adjutant S. Heffer with music by Professor Lewis and an address by W. P. Miles. Veterans from the Civil War and their successors were noted, and news of Roy Chambers’s hospital recovery was shared.
