A Saturday news release says continued interstate expansion would bring strict access control to Sidney, Nebraska, and other high-traffic routes. With daily counts above 3,000 on several highways, officials foresee limited entry points and restricted commercial development along the corridor, affecting tourism and town growth.
Sidney merchants plan a street sale on Saturday July 7 with several sidewalk tables. The Sid ney Chamber of Commerce will publicize the event and sponsor a free Fox Theatre movie for children in the trade territory. The next chamber meeting is June 5 at Sioux Ordnance Depot with Dr. Walter K. Beggs as principal speaker.
Dr B H Grimm suffered a heart attack Friday afternoon while driving on the north side. He stopped and asked a boy to summon an ambulance. Family reports he is resting comfortably at Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital and had a quiet night.
Charles Margritz of Lexington was fined 50 dollars and costs in Cheyenne County Court after pleading guilty to procuring liquor for a minor. Margritz was arrested in Potter Friday night by the Nebraska Safety Patrol.
Sidney prepares for pool season as Legion Park pool opens the weekend of June 9 10 per City Manager Murray Fuller with weather as a factor. City crews begin painting outside and inside bath house while Arlina Harte takes over as pool manager after serving as assistant in 1954.
The Ayers-Spearow Agency renames to Ayers-Smith Agency after Richard R Smith purchased Herschel and Glenn Spearow interests. By June 1 the firm moves from 837 Illinois St to 1950 Illinois St in Jerry's Liquor building. The West Illinois site offers better parking and convenience while C. A. Story Agency expands its facilities and continues in real estate mortgage banking and life insurance with Glenn Spearow as special agent and Herschel Spearow shifting to farm real estate duties.
Sioux Ordnance Depot workers will receive cash awards for valuable suggestions under the Army incentive program. Col. Wayne Wood will present at the ceremony with top honoree William Schulz receiving a total of 410 dollars for three awards. Names and amounts of other single and multiple awards are listed, and KSID will tape the ceremony to air at 5 30 p.m. tomorrow.
Past District Governor Leon Fine announced the Kimball Rotary Club will obtain official charter on June 21 with Sidney Club as sponsor. The event, in Kimball, is expected to draw about 300 Rotarians and wives from Nebraska Wyoming and Colorado.
The Sidney Chamber of Commerce schedules its second quarterly meeting for Tuesday June 5 at the Sioux Ordnance Depot cafeteria. Dr Walter K Beggs of the University of Nebraska will speak on the community relationship with the depot. Reservations through the chamber office.
Fred Seaton publisher of the Hastings Tribune and special assistant to President Eisenhower was nominated to be Secretary of the Interior. He would succeed Douglas McKay amid rumors another Nebraskan, Clarence Davis of Lincoln, was considered.
Two crashes near Lodgepole and the Cheyenne County line injured two people when a 1948 tractor trailer and a Miner car collided head on side swipe on Highway 30 Friday afternoon. George Bauer 19 Bayard and Arleene Miner 36 Colorado Springs were hospitalized after the wreck. A second trip east of Sidney involved a 1953 car and a 1938 auto with no injuries. Cheyenne County Safety Patrol noted other minor collisions with modest damages nearby.
Oil firms including Ohio Oil Co and Stanolind Oil & Gas report field extensions and new locations across Kimball Banner and Morrill counties. Wells like Anthony Egging No 1, Ostgren No 3, and Schultz No 1 advance drilling toward sand horizons as 50 plus fields produce an average 23,462 barrels weekly per the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.
Weekend rainfall across Cheyenne County and surrounding Panhandle areas brightened crop hopes. Reports show 0.88 to 1.40 inches in locales from Potter to Gurley aiding winter wheat, pastures, and spring safflower irrigation. A brief tornado near Harrisburg and forecasted localized thundershowers accompanied the beneficial moisture. Harvests in north central Texas already begin with yields reaching up to 60 bushels per acre.
President Eisenhower signed a order stopping surplus crop production on federally owned lands with exceptions for equities. Sioux Ordnance Depot leases issued after May 21 are affected, while current leases expire Dec 31 and need no immediate action. Rep. Miller praises the move as a step to reduce government owned surplus farming.
Cheyenne County courthouse changes to summer hours effective June 1. Offices open 8 am to 12 pm and 1 pm to 4 pm Monday through Friday, and 8 am to 1 pm Saturday. Total 40-hour work week to avoid heat. Commissioners approved the schedule, active through June through September.
Union Pacific announces June 1 personnel changes. C H Burnett becomes Nebraska division superintendent in Omaha, succeeding J E Malick as chief rules examiner. Burnett, 37, previously served as dispatcher and trainmaster in the northwest and Idaho division superintendent.
Fox Theatre patrons will receive a sneak preview of a highly anticipated new picture on Tuesday night at 8 18 with the regular billing. Manager Elmer Hames disclosed today.
