Mobil Minuteman garages studied for mobile ICBM defense

The Defense Department weighs a Garage Mobile Minuteman program to relocate Minuteman missiles into five mobile garage sites linked by roads. Each missile would ride a semitrailer, kept in constant contact with NORAD, to confound Soviet planners and deter attacks. Feasibility costs and strategic benefits under review by Boeing, General Electric, North America Rockwell, and Air Force systems command.

Centennial Parade Entries Deadline Sets May 30

Cheyenne County prepares for a June 6 Centennial parade with a 10 a.m. start at Ilinois Street. Panhandle forecast shows showers and cooler temperatures ahead

Rites Set Friday for Mrs Weyerts in Weyerts Church

Mrs Henry Weyerts 67 lifelong Weyerts resident died Monday night in a Denver hospital after long illness. Wheat In Boot Stage As Nebraska Crops Benefit From Rain

Localized rains in Nebraska replenish topsoil moisture after hot, windy days. Wheat is in the boot stage in the southern Panhandle and headed out south of the Platte River. Corn planting nearing completion at 95 percent. Sorghum and soybeans show strong progress with 60 percent planted. Sugar beets and potato planting advance with good field conditions.

Memorial Day Observed With Local Programs Across Communities

Memorial Day will be observed with special programs in Sidney and surrounding areas. Sidney offices close Friday and Saturday with a 10 a.m. ceremony at Greenwood Cemetery featuring Frank Mattoon as speaker and the usual band and Legion/VFW participants. Lodgepole holds a 10 a.m. parade to Pleasant View Cemetery with a high school band and Legion and Auxiliary members, followed by a cemetery program led by Rev. Raymond Thiel and other local leaders. Potter hosts a 10 a.m. Legion Hall program with invocation by Rev. Ted McIntyre, a boys quartet, and speaker Ross Boyer of Gering, followed by cemetery services.

Expanding Southwest Oil Field Adds Fourth Well

In Cheyenne County the Southwest Sidney field expands as three new wells in section 3-12-51 are joined by a fourth, No. 1-B Underdown, with No. 3 Hurt testing 3000 feet of oil in the J sand. Exeter Drilling Co. and partners drill amid mixed results as the Nebraska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission notes cautious progress and ongoing drilling for a wildcat near Gurley.

Campground Gains Fans Across Cheyenne County

Cheyenne County reports growing popularity at the west edge campground near the county fairgrounds. Ed Cole, chamber manager, notes Wheatbelt Public Power District will add more electrical plug ins after two Hemet California visitors praised free parking and Lions Club donated tables. Fifteen campers stayed one night, highlighting positive public relations for the county.
