City Manager Virgil Knowles disclosed he will seek release at Monday night’s meeting to accept a higher paying city manager post in Parsons Kansas. Parsons population about 16 000, with reports of a substantial salary increase. Knowles would install Parsons city manager form of government, leaving Sidney around July 1. He came to Sidney three years ago during a housing boom, credited with expanding water services without bonds and improving administration. his replacement is expected to be difficult for the council.

Prowler Martinez Pleads Guilty in Police Court
Ebart Martinez of Sidney pleaded guilty to trespassing in police court Monday morning and received a 10 day jail sentence. He was arrested shortly after midnight Saturday for prowling the J. C. Bush property on 12th Ave, police said.

Grandmother Defies Armed Robber at Cafe Inn
Blanche King a 69 year old cashier at the Maroon Inn stood up to a pistol wielding robber Friday night, refusing to surrender the cafe receipts. He fled after taking wallets worth about $15 from King and Miss Margaret Renfro, who handed over around $3. Police seek a lone man in his late twenties, five six, dark hair and hazel eyes. He may have left on foot toward railroad tracks after the failed robbery.

Funeral Rites Today for Infant Timothy Houser
Funeral services will be held today at Gehrig Funeral Home for Timothy Mark Houser infant son of Mr. and Mrs. James W. Houser Jr. who died Monday morning in a local hospital. The Rev. Harold BiTaylor will preside at 1:30 PM. Burial is in Bohemian Cemetery south of Sunol. The infant, born May 19, was a twin with James William Houser IV and is survived by his parents two sisters Kathy Lou and Judy Lee and his twin brother.

Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Tuesday at St Paul’s Lutheran Church for Mrs Emilie M. Thieman 68 a longtime Cheyenne County resident who died Friday night at a Kimball hospital. Burial follows Greenwood Cemetery under Craig Mortuary direction. Emilie Eden born March 25 1885 in Broadlands Illinois moved to Chester Nebraska with her parents at age eight married Carl Thieman in 1904. The couple moved to Cheyenne County in 1909 settled near Gurley then Burlington Colorado 1924 Sidney 193? and Kimball 1951. Survivors include two sons Ernest Corvallis Oregon and Albert Kimball two daughters Mrs Art Ladine Dalton and Mrs Joseph Higgins Long Beach California a brother Barney Eden Downey California nine grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Overman Ostgren Funerals Held Sunday Monday
Funeral services were held Sunday for Kenneth Overman 25 of Kimball and Monday for Robert Dean Ostgren 18. Both died in a light plane crash on the Ostgren farm near Dix during flight instruction begun days earlier. The Aeronca two seater stalled and nosedived. witnesses including Ostgren’s father and Eddie Garrett described multiple stalls before impact at about 5:15 a.m. Burial was in Kimball cemetery.

Street work is under way in Sidney on a full scale with paving and curb and gutter projects aimed at completion this year. Major efforts target Country Club Heights west Sidney and north side areas, while resurfacing will be needed for the Valley View housing area in the southeast. A key goal is concrete paving of Hickory Street and parts of 9th 11th and 12th Avenues, addressing heavy traffic where oil matting failed. The city council approved a concrete paving program last fall and construction is now ongoing.
