Supreme Court Rules Child Labor Law Unconstitutional
The Supreme Court struck down the 1919 child labor law as an unconstitutional use of Congress taxing power to regulate state police power. The rule barred employment of under 14 in mills mines and factories by a 10 percent tax on profits. The decision is seen as a win for Southern mill owners and signals broader limits on federal reach. Senate tariff debate moves slowly with eight sections held and Republican attendance questioned by Senator McCumber. Democrats oppose a provision granting the President power to adjust duties within an 80 percent range and to proclaim American valuation.
