President Coolidge vetoed the McNary Haugen farm relief bill marking the second disapproval of a farm plan with an equalization fee. Congress faces veto override or repassage without the fee, raising a pivotal agricultural policy fight ahead of the presidential conventions.
The May meeting at the I C O F hall reviewed routine business and reports on a recent dance and the boys baseball league. A plan was set to hold a big prize costume dance and to coordinate Fourth of July observances with other city groups. The boys league reports regular Saturday games and potential schedule adjustments to allow more practice and to select players for Sidney’s all SIDNEY team for district or state contests.
Yesterday marked the opening of the new Atmar downstairs store. Hundreds visited to inspect stock spanning sporting goods toys novelties luggage light hardware and work clothing. Manager Martin expects strong public approval as shelving was installed and interior refinements completed for a better main floor arrangement.
Hon. A. J. Weaver republican candidate for governor spoke at a Sidney chamber of commerce dinner about internal waterways and Missouri river development. He argued cheaper midwest transport is essential, citing rail limits, and said river improvements would aid industry, agriculture, and railroads, asserting his future governorship and leadership.
General Umberto Nobile commanded the dirigible Italia as it began northward travel from Kings Bay Spitzbergen at 4 40 am Wednesday. The expedition aims to reach the North Pole about 750 miles away to plant a cross blessed by Pope Pius. Father Safranochi and the crew witnessed the ceremony before departure.
Memorial Day events organized by an American Legion committee in Sidney include a 9:30 a.m. parade to the cemetery, services at the grave of the unknown soldier, grave decorations in local and county cemeteries, and a 11:00 a.m. program at the U S A theatre with Rev. Clare Welker delivering the address and other ministers assisting. Stores to close for forenoon observance. full program to be published in The Telegraph next Tuesday.
The Cheyenne county eighth grade graduating exercises were held at 2 30 p m Wednesday at the U S A theatre. The program opened with America sung by the audience followed by an invocation by Rev Clare Welker. Honor students from each school were announced with county wide averages and top performers listed for Sidney Lodge Polk Potter Sunol Lorenzo and other districts.
Four bandits killed cashier J F Parrish and his father A N Parrish at First National Bank of Samar. Assistant Cashier E A Lundgred and bookkeeper A E Kessinger abducted. Bandits fled in a Buick toward Rocky Ford after a gun battle. About $7,000 in currency and liberty bonds taken. Local posse warned as Colorado broad alert issued.
Taylor Hospital of Sidney invites the public to visit on Saturday May 26 with two sessions from 2 30 to 4 30 and 7 30 to 8 30 p m A baby party starts at 3 00 p m featuring babies born in the hospital and a social mingle with nurses and staff
The full teaching staff for Sidney schools in 1928 29 is announced with many returning members. New hires bring proven credentials ensuring a capable lineup headed by Superintendent G F Liebendorfer and Principal Orrin Weymouth. Key staff in various departments include Ethel Fitzsimons, Leo Black, Ivan McCormack, Dorothy Abbott, Hazel Gillette, Winifred Lute, Mayme White, Lucy Taft, and others across grade levels and wards.
Trainload of Baldwin-Gleaner combines coming to Sidney is noted alongside a Sidney High School graduation report. Thirty-two seniors, including valedictorian Miss Freda Thompson and salutatorian Miss Gwendolyn Jorgenson, received diplomas at the Methodist church. The event featured remarks by Supt. G F Liebendorfer, addresses by judges Weaver and Dimery, and musical performances by the girls glee club.
Basil F. Lipska of Potter died in an Omaha hospital Monday at age 24 years four months and seven days. His body was sent to Potter where Howard funeral chapel handled arrangements. Short services were held at Siams residence with Rev. A E Murless officiating. Remains were taken to Redington for burial after service at Redington church. Frank Deitrich of Scottsbluff was severely injured in an auto accident near Potter when a turn sign was missed and the car overturned after speeding.
Cheyenne county gears up for a historic shipment of 75 Gleaner Baldwin combines, valued at about 115000 dollars, arriving by Union Pacific to Sidney and Deuel County dealers to aid the 1928 wheat harvest. The event includes a parade, air bombs, band concert, and a promotional film, with Walker paying the freight.
Open house will be held at the new telephone central office at the corner of 12th Avenue and Jackson Street on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week. Guided tours from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. explain the common battery switchboard and how calls are handled. P. C. Cunningham invites residents of Sidney and nearby areas to visit and watch operators at work.
The California to the east tourist business began on the Union Pacific yesterday with a rush. Six sections of No 28, two of No 2, and four sections of No 26 ran in the morning, with several extra trains, mostly carrying silk, going east Wednesday evening. Local engine men report handling about all the business they can at this time.
