Sidney County Proceedings Cover Road Petitions and Budgets

The Sidney Nebraska board met May 20 1908 to hear a road petition near section 31 21 51 west and another near section 28 22 50 west with remonstrance set for June 8. They granted a consent road and a second road 167 A, ordered crossing duties on Union Pacific land, and approved multiple fund warrants for road bridge general and county purposes including $75 for teachers institute and $2000 for a lot purchase adjoining the courthouse. An error in assessment was corrected and a tax refund request denied while many local expenditures and personnel costs were itemized. The session adjourned without date.

Sidney School Board Elects Teachers for Coming Year

The Sidney school board held an executive session with moderator J. L. McIntosh and completed the teacher election for next year. Elected to vacancies were Emma Eggenberger of York for the fourth and fifth grades and E. L. Carl of Peru for the high school. The board praised the choices and predicted bright prospects for Slaney schools.

Rabbit Foot Mac and a Sheriff Payoff Tale

Sheriff McDaniel earned twenty five dollars this week in a tale of luck and bets on Taft. A prisoner Joan Rainbolt escaped Sedgewick county jail on March six and was captured two months later near John Eckert's. Julesburg Sheriff C Morgan aided in reclaiming the escapee at a price, highlighting caution for honest settlers seeking a safe county.

Baccalaureate Sermon Opens Sidney High Commencement

The Sidney high school commencement began Monday May 17 with a baccalaureate sermon by Rev. Gunder man a Lutheran minister assisted by Rev. Corbett and Rev. James. The Lutheran church was well filled as the sermon offered practical guidance for the graduating class and listeners. The service featured unusually fine music from the choir enhancing the occasion.

Sidney Stamps Alliance in Five to One Baseball Win

A large crowd watched Alliance visit Sidney last Sunday but the Sidney club dominated, winning 5 to 1. Sidney pitchers held firm while the batting showed strength, with several dollars reportedly donated by Alliance rooters after the loss.

Watchman Stationed at Union Pacific Crossing West of Depot

The Union Pacific company places a regular watchman at the crossing west of the depot to prevent accidents with passing trains and the switch engine. Farmers from the North divide and townspeople welcome the safety measure as Sidney grows as a railroad town with extensive yard expansions to handle rising traffic. Spence Harris and Gay Barnhart rented the former John Wales building and will open a garage and machine shops soon, led by Harris a former Stotte Signal head machinist.
