A dispatch boat from Key West says the Spanish fleet entered Santiago de Cuba Thursday morning and American gunboats escaped. Battleships rush to the port for an anticipated attack once heavy ships concentrate. The report sparks wild enthusiasm in Madrid and London.
Washington reports both the navy and state department use West Indian cables to locate Cervera's squadron. Sampson near Cuba’s northern coast may join Schley and Watson. Four monitors likely off Havana while Sampson and Schley pursue the enemy. A battle south of Florida is expected before week’s end.

A 15 member committee was formed to set assessments and inspect cattle, with dues proposed at 3.5 cents per head and annual dues of 3.5 dollars.

The R. R. Boys band led by Drum Major Solomoneon paraded from the courthouse at 5 30 pm with a plug hat for the occasion. They joined the Woman's Relief Corps G A R and Sons of Veterans at a new flag staff near the oil house in the railroad yards. J N Stifler led three cheers for Dewey and Sampson as Rev Thos Bakes gave a brief war history and read a Dewey poem. Ed Doran and A Britton of the G A R raised a large American flag as engines whistle amid cheers. Rev BR Moore delivered an address recalling Indianapolis flag traditions and the crowd cheered the old soldiers as the ceremony closed Long may it float.
The Chicago Union Pacific and Northwestern Line introduces new Buffet Smoking and Library cars in modern design. Through Salt Lake City to Chicago the cars operate daily via The Overland Limited with through tickets via The Overland Route.
