Open House at Sioux Ordnance Depot Planned

Western Nebraska residents will view one of the nation’s largest ammunition storage areas during the Sioux Ordnance Depot Open House. The event on Army Forces Day runs 1 to 4 PM with motor tours, Nike and Corporal missile lectures, and displays in Barracks No 5. Harold Katz will receive a chamber plaque for his service before departing to Redstone Arsenal.

School Bands To Hold Final Concert Tonight

Final band concert of the school year scheduled at 8 o clock in the Sidney Junior High School Auditorium. Admission is 10 cents. George Inn, instrumental instructor, leads the Elementary Band of 109 fifth and sixth graders, the Cadet Band of 100 Junior High students, and the Senior High Band with 89 sophomores juniors and seniors.

Oil and gas updates from Ohio report three attempts to extend the West Sidney Field failed, with Robirds No 1 shut in after no gas shows. New Uptegrove C No 4 well begins in Spearow Field near Gurley, while several Cheyenne and Kimball County wells report dry holes or limited production. Roads, depths, and field names include Pitman 32-13, Nelson 1, Sherer 1, Wilcox 1, Schricker 1, Gunderson 1, Engstrom A I, Kennedy 4, Swisher, Hruska 2, and Hruska discovery beyond Kimball County.

Union Pacific Pledges Help to Build Sidney Industrial Tract

Union Pacific officials pledged full cooperation to develop a 10 to 12 acre tract near Sidney for new or relocated industry. A Chamber of Commerce industrial committee meeting outlined utilities, potential sale or lease terms, and possible drainage work with 60 days to finalize details.

State VFW Chief To Speak Sunday

Cleon Pratt state commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be the main speaker Sunday noon at a district II meeting at the Yendis Cafe. Pratt hails from Elgin and about 100 VFW and auxiliary members from Kimball Scottsbluff Bridgeport Lyman and Sidney are slated to attend. A public initiation follows at 1 30 at the City Auditorium by the Scottsbluff degree team. District Commander Tom Lenzen will preside at the 2 pm meeting. Hosts are post commander Simmons Cook Jr and auxiliary president Mary Mitchell.

Appearance survey set for Sidney business district

Architectural eyes will be listed in Sidney this fall as the esthetic committee of the Sidney Community Improvement Project invites architectural students and instructors to survey store fronts and study ways to improve appearance. A slogan reads Look at your town everyone else does. Other proposed projects include landscaping Lodgepole Creek and enforcing zoning rules on highway frontage. Also slated is sand blasting the county courthouse to remove grime and checking zoning violations city and countywide.

Edson Walker Dies After Farm Fire at 73

Edson E. Walker 73 died Wednesday in Memorial Hospital from severe burns after burning weeds on his farm south of Sidney. Funeral services Sunday at 2 PM at the Christian Church, with Rev. H. H. Utterback officiating and Greenwood Cemetery burial. Survived by two daughters, ten grandchildren, two sisters, four brothers, and many relatives.

State Veterinarian To Speak Here On Brucellosis Project

Dr. Milo Johnson from the state veterinarian’s office will visit Cheyenne County for two evenings to explain a calfhood vaccination program and a five year brucellosis control plan. A petition drive seeks county approval. All stockmen should attend to learn implications. On Monday he speaks at Sunnyside School near Sunol at 7:30 pm. Tuesday he addresses a Sidney courthouse audience at 7:30 pm.

Cheyenne County residents face higher penalties for late personal and business property tax inventories. The county assessor reports the current penalty total at 23500 from 81 delinquent schedules. More late inventories are anticipated.

Strict Savings Leads German Couple to Oregon Farm

Mr and Mrs Gerhart Heuer who moved from Hanover Germany to Cheyenne County three years ago have bought a 190 acre farm near Hebo Oregon with 3 milk cows and farm equipment. Morris Jessen helped with the move and Heuer saved money by hard work earning $250 monthly with $196 saved in one month. The Heuers plan Oregon farming after viewing local pictures. They have two sons aged eight and 11 months.

Wheat Quotas Expected for Cheyenne County in 1957

Cheyenne County's winter wheat acreage allotment for 1957 is expected to be announced next week by the state ASC. The county share may match the present crop's 164,297 acres, with a possibility of a slight increase toward the 1955 figure of 165,860 acres. Nebraska's total allotment is 3,234,827 acres, up from 3,200,332 in 1956, while the national total remains 55 million acres. Base acreages are being recomputed, and once the county total is released, individual farm allocations will be determined by a percentage factor.
