Potter County leads in oil and a dull Cheyenne primary

In Cheyenne County the primary produced a light 1,412 turnout with Cecil Hunt winning the Democratic first district commissioner nomination 105 to 61 over Joe Bonkiewicz Jr. Lemoyne Johnson was unopposed GOP first district candidate with 44. election costs were about $3 per ballot. Eisenhower led GOP with 669 votes. Beallaver and other races noted with various vote totals across statewide and county results.

Kindergarten Round Up Registration Moves to Spring

Sidney Public Schools announce a spring Kindergarten Round-Up replacing fall registration. Fall registrations are Monday and Tuesday, May 21 and 22, with Monday for A to M and Tuesday for N to Z. Registration hours vary by school. a preschool physical exam program is also planned in cooperation with local physicians and dentists.

Counties May Buy Blue Cross Insurance for Needy

Atty. Gen. Clarence S. Beck rules county boards may purchase Blue Cross and Blue Shield group insurance to cover medical, surgical, and hospital care for county-needy residents. He says providing benefits is a governmental duty funded by taxation and counties may exercise reasonable discretion in how it is carried out.

Hart Named Welfare Director In Cheyenne County

Mrs. Joan Hart was provisionally appointed permanent Cheyenne County Welfare Office director by the county commissioners. She had been an assistant and was one of four applicants. She will take a state test. Salary set at 280 dollars per month.

Upturn in Cheyenne wildcat oil hits 930 feet oil

Cheyenne County reports its second wildcat oil strike of the year, the 22nd in the Panhandle, with Miracle-Fifer Drilling Co. at Anderson No. 1 northwest of 12-15-53 and southwest of Ittner Field. A sand stem test yielded 930 feet oil and 116 feet oil cut mud and water. logs to follow.

Mailboxes In Sidney Are Being Repainted

The local post office directs repainting of all olive drab mailboxes in Sidney to a red white and blue scheme. Tops will be red, bottoms blue and lettering will be affixed with white paint.

Omaha Boosters Coming Thursday

A trainload of Omaha boosters will spread goodwill through Cheyenne County tomorrow with eighty Omaha businessmen arriving in Lodgepole Sunol Sidney and Potter at specified times to parade, hand out candy and balloons, while residents are urged to display welcome flags. The goodwill train will shelter overnight in Sidney, and city officials warn it will block the Tenth Ave crossing from 7 p.m. to 4 a.m with the 12th Ave crossing recommended.

SOD Worker Killed In Car Train Crash

Reinhold Brening 30 of Bayard an explosive breakdown operator at Sioux Ordnance Depot died instantly in a car train crash near Bayard. His 1955 car was struck by Burlington train No 31 as it crossed an open crossing. The train traveled 59 mph. Brening had worked at the depot since 1950 except for a brief 9 month gap. He lived with his mother. a brother survived.

Wheat Fields Need Rain To Speed Growth

Winter wheat in Cheyenne County benefits from early moisture but most acreage needs rain as crops develop rapidly. A statewide crop survey notes light precipitation in Nebraska’s wheat belt with parts of the Panhandle promising for summer fallow wheat. Farmers expect a soaking rain to ease worries as corn planting lags behind last year due to cold and drought. Pasture and hay growth improve with warm spells, but growth is being grazed down quickly where feed is scarce.

Final Band Concert To Be Given Friday

Nearly 300 Sidney Public Schools band students will perform in a combined concert Friday at 8 pm in the Sidney Junior High School Auditorium. George Hinn announces no admission charge and invites the public. The program features the Elementary Band of 109 fifth and sixth graders, the Cadet Band of 100 junior high students, and the Senior High Band of 9 sophomores juniors and seniors.

Prominent South Table Farmer Critically Burned

Edson Walker a 73 year old farmer from northeast of Lorenzo is in Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital in critical condition with third degree burns covering about 50 percent of his body. He was burning weeds on his farm when a fire spread to three tar paper sheep shacks destroying them. He was alone. Details of how the accident happened are unclear. He has received blood transfusions and was resting at telegraph press time.

Sidney Council Approves Study for First Off Street Parking

The Sidney City Council discussed a wide range of issues including a plan to establish the city’s first municipal off street parking lot. They approved negotiations with landowner L. O. Keedick, authorized a five year airport management lease with Gene Warren, and debated dog control, power plant usage, and future electrical line improvements. Other actions included paving district contracts, Legion Park bids, zoning hearings, a railroad storage lease, and a new land plat.

Sidney High Baccalaureate Planned For Sunday Evening

The Sidney High School graduating class of 1956 will hold baccalaureate services this Sunday at 8 p.m. in the Junior High Auditorium. Seniors will attend in a body. doors open to parents and friends. The program includes processional, invocation by Rev. Parks, vocal solo How Lovely Are Thy Dwellings, scripture, prayer, Mendelssohn triple trio, baccalaureate sermon by Rev. George Hinn's Father Buried In Rushville

Funeral services were held at Rushville Nebraska Methodist Church for Samuel Hinn 80 who died last Saturday He was the father of George Hinn the instrumental music director in the Sidney schools Mr Hinn was retired and the family previously lived in Sidney before moving to Rushville His wife survives

SHS Senior Class Program Is Tonight

The Sidney High School seniors present their annual class program at 7:30 this evening in the Junior High School Auditorium. Admission is free as parents and friends are invited to attend the Garden of Dreams themed program featuring the class history prophecy will and the school key robe and colors being presented to the junior class. A Nebraska Heart Association release notes Lodgepole Sidney Ellis Lodge and BPOE raised 2046 dollars for the Heart Fund Drive. Lodgepole Monday Evening Club sponsored and credited 240 dollars. Potter American Legion in Cheyenne County ranked fifth in Posts aiding the campaign with 200 dollars.
