Mass Grave at Scotts Bluff Links Woodland Culture to Nebraska Past
University anthropologist John L. Champs called the Scotts Bluff County mass grave site highly significant for understanding Nebraska’s Woodland Culture, once thought eastern. artifacts including boatstone and a special arrowhead tie the find to eastern discoveries. The remains indicate a hunter society around 700 to 1000 years ago, before Woodland people vanished around 1276 to 1299, then replaced by later cultures. The mass grave was found April 29 on the James Lane farm after erosion work uncovered it, with discovery reported by Thomas L. Green of Scottsbluff and Nebraska Historical Society.
