Nebraska State Fair Pig Selection Guidelines Emphasize Weight and Backfat
Williams outlines target weights for market hogs at the fair, noting 200-225 pounds for show pigs and 190-220 pounds for lower market weight. Weaning pigs at 6-8 weeks and 40-50 pounds can reach market weight in about three months with proper feeder selection. He advises separating 4-H feeder pigs and stresses desirable traits like backfat, body length, natural muscularity, and a trim jowls and ham. Worming should occur as soon as pigs are selected.
