Scattered afternoon and evening showers expected in Nebraska's Panhandle with possible cloudburst activity. Weekend warmth followed, aid to crops and livestock shows continued good soil and surface moisture, corn and sorghum planting to follow dryland work, statewide rainfall above normal except some areas.
Lincoln Nebraska will be featured by radio commentator Alex Dreier on a nationwide NBC program this Sunday. Gov Victor Anderson opens with a welcome message and praises Nebraska as the beet state while inviting listeners to explore pioneer routes and Neighborly Nebraska.
Lincoln Senator Carpenter told the legislature that his western constituents seek road restorations as compensation for higher highway user taxes. He moved to hold SB 140 on restored highways until May 13, tying the decision on road updates to the highway revenue measure.
County agent Ivan Liljegren reports widespread cutworm infestation in roughly half of Cheyenne County wheat fields. He urges farmers to inspect now as jointing nears and ground spraying is advised before aerial applications. many fields show light to moderate wheat stem maggot problems and weed spray is often combined with cutworm chemicals.
Police report a full tank of gasoline siphoned from Floyd Worth’s car parked at 1837 Second Avenue in Sioux Villa. Theft occurred yesterday evening with 6:40 pm call to Sidney police.
A public auction at the county courthouse sold a full half-section in northwest Cheyenne County for 35 200 at 110 dollars per acre. Buyer Leon Karnik of Sidney acquired the west half of 21 16 52 with half the mineral rights. The tract has 309 crop acres per the Soil Conservation Service and belonged to the Waldo Braren estate.
The Cheyenne County Soil Conservation District will host county ministers with a Friday noon luncheon at Yendis Cafe then conduct a conservation tour weather permitting. Clergy will receive Soil Stewardship Week materials. event runs May 26 to June 2, extended by Ed Block district chairman.
The Nebraska Highway 30 Association will hold a meeting in Sidney tomorrow at noon at the Yendis Cafe. An annual election of officers is planned. M R Sigler, Sidney Chamber of Commerce manager, urges attendance by anyone interested in highway development and problems. reservations due by 10 am tomorrow.
In Cheyenne County the Terman No. 1 wildcat south of Potter failed to show commercial oil in the D and J sandstone levels after shows but no drill stem test. Davis Oil Co. Hagemeister No. 1 in Scotts Bluff County nears production casing, potential first oil in the county if successful, watched by Panhandle oilmen.
Petroleum Information reports 96 new wells staked in the West last week and 231 rotary rigs active across 10 states for the week ending April 29. Through four months, 1 245 wells completed with 428 oil and 185 gas successes, highlighting strong early year production in Colorado, Nebraska, Wyoming, New Mexico, Montana, North Dakota, Utah, South Dakota, Kansas and Nevada.
The Stardust Hobby Specialty Shop and the Cafe Sportsman announce openings on West Illinois Street. Mrs Rudy Munderloh owns the Stardust shop with expanded hobby items and door prizes. Gene and Wilma Shuler operate the Cafe Sportsman in the former Deluxe Cafe site offering free coffee and donuts and a Mother's Day weekend special. Daisy Queen by Mr and Mrs R H Wester also plans spring opening, with Brandin Iron Cocktail Bar and Lounge joining the new west end lineup.
The Sidney Board of Education directed its attorney to draft plots and transfer petitions to move two parcels east of Sidney from District No 1 to District No 77. A 16 acre Union Pacific tract and a 20 acre Sidney Beef Co. tract would connect to District 77 if accepted. The move aims to attract new business, with Chamber of Commerce officials calling the plan favorable.
The City of Sidney will implement a new garbage collection ordinance making the city the sole collector with 30 gallon cans and covered containers. Residents will not haul trash to the dump or use 55 gallon barrels. burning remains allowed but barrels not dumped. The city will phase in the change, collecting revenue from previously unbilled accounts, and will end Sunday use of the landfill.
Neal Craig of Sidney was elected chaplain at District 2 Veterans of Foreign Wars in Bridgeport Sunday afternoon. Glenn Mitchell of Bridgeport was elected commander for 1957, with Lawrence Engström Kimball as senior vice commander, Bill Selack Scottsbluff as junior vice commander, and Jack Warren Kimball as quartermaster. The district backed Cash Adcock Scottsbluff for state junior vice commander at the Lincoln convention June 11 to 13 and approved awards for top membership getters in each post.
Bids will be accepted from May 10 to 20 for the federal contract to operate a branch post office at the Sioux Ordnance Depot. The new SOD postal contract runs from July 1, 1957 to June 30, 1959. Stewart has bid forms for all interested bidders.
The St Patrick s band will present its annual spring concert Friday May 10 at 8 pm in the Youth Center. Directed by Sister Francesca the 40 member group will perform marches popular tunes and semi classical numbers. Admission for adults is 50 cents and 25 cents for children.
The Christ Construction Co. wins the contract to add 565 square feet to the Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. building in Sidney. The brick and stone addition, 38 ft 10 in by 14 ft 6 in, includes wiring and redecorating at an estimated cost of 16000 dollars with completion expected in August 1957.
Dr. A Leland Forrest chancellor of Nebraska Wesleyan University died at Bryan Memorial Hospital Lincoln after two weeks illness Hodgkin's disease. Funeral at First Methodist Church Lincoln with burial at Lincoln Memorial Park. Survived by wife and three children.
