Home improvements lead Sidney April building permits

City inspector Dean Starr reports April permits totaled over 26 400 dollars for remodeling and new work, with home improvements about 9 percent of the count. Permits cover remodeling construction or demolition for residential and commercial buildings with fees based on project cost.

Oktoberfest plans grow in Sidney Cheyenne County

Cheyenne County Chamber of Commerce directors approved planning an Oktober fest in Sidney for October. Ed Cole said the event would honor German heritage and tie to the American Revolution Bicentennial while supporting local retail promotion. City Manager Maynard Dils guided the idea as the chamber shifts to Better Downtown Sidney Association for promotions.

Thirsty fugitive arrested in Sidney

Deputy Darrell Johnson jailed William Ohmer Prahm 40 of Malcomb Oklahoma after Prahm walked into the Sidney county jail asking to cash a check. A NCIC check revealed a 1965 Orange County California warrant with warning he is extremely dangerous. Prahm stands 6 foot 4 and 220 pounds and is awaiting extradition.

Lawrence Marrin elected president of Cheyenne County Historical Association

Lawrence Marrin of Dalton was elected president at Monday's reorganizational meeting of the Cheyenne County Historical Association board. Raymond Nienhueser was chosen vice president, Loraine Lafler secretary, and Carl Crouse treasurer. Committees were formed for the Commander's Home restoration and Officers' Quarters renovation.

Frank Finney Charged With Embezzlement in Sidney

Frank H. Finney of Sidney faces embezzlement charges in Cheyenne County Court for allegedly misusing funds from the South Ward elementary school lunch program between August 1967 and February 1975. He was principal during that period and arraignment is expected this week. The Sidney Board of Education accepted his resignation March 11 and later referred the matter to its bonding company after a special meeting.

Limited rain helps soils but not crops in area

County extension agent Ken Sakurada said Tuesday's light rain and snow improved soil moisture but a good soaking rain is needed. Sidney observers reported .17 inch and High Plains Ag Lab measured .16 inch as forecasts note warm winds erode moisture.

County Hears Request for Juvenile Funds

Cheyenne County Commissioners discussed allocating about 10,000 dollars in fiscal 1976 to board local juvenile delinquents in correctional or rehabilitation homes. County Atty Don Tedesco explained the fund would cover costs when state money or family payment is unavailable. The judge has discretion to order placements, while commissioners would ensure funds exist when needed and check comparable budgets from Scotts Bluff County. Protest deadlines for property taxes were extended to May 10, and a billboard project along I 80 near Sidney was approved after selling the county site rights.

Open House Draws 2500 at Western Nebraska Tech College

About 2,500 people attended Western Nebraska Technical College Open House on Sunday. Aaron Harmon of Sidney won the pocket calculator contest with 3 268 pennies guessed in a jar. actual count 3 250. The event showcased the Industrial Education Fair and included judging awards for senior and junior students across numerous craft and drafting categories.

Omaha Tornado Toll Fuels Wide Cleanup Effort

National Guardsmen patrolled 3400 blocks of Omaha to curb looting as residents began extensive cleanup after three tornadoes killed three people and caused millions in damage.
