Woman Fights Off Attack At Sixty Depot
Arnold Cunningham, 35, a worker at the Sioux Ordnance Depot, faces charges of assault with intent to commit rape after allegedly attacking a 13 year old girl in Sidney. The girl, on crutches, fought back with a butcher knife as a landlord and police intervened. Cunningham was arrested by Sidney police at the depot barracks and held for county court.

Conditions Of Injured Boys Reported Improved

Moisture Eases Worry Over Sub-Soil in Panhandle Wheat Belt
Western Nebraska's rain and snow boosted sub soil moisture crucial for May and June. A Division of Agricultural Statistics survey, taken April 20–28 in the western two thirds of the wheat belt, found deeper moisture in summer fallowed fields than in continuous cropped land by 7.9 inches. April 1953 proved one of the Panhandle’s coldest on record, with below normal temperatures and varying moisture, while cumulative rainfall remained below average in main wheat areas though some pockets reached average or above. Dry weather ahead could threaten harvest, so farmers seek a sufficient sub-soil reservoir to weather June's uncertain rains.
