Loyalty Day Dinner Urges Youth Involvement To Close Gap

John Peetz Jr. urged involvement to bridge the generation gap at the Loyalty Day dinner by Post 610, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and its Ladies Auxiliary. He warned that apathy harms youth and praised directing their energy, education, and devotion for a strong future. Jim Knackstedt, St Patrick's High School, won the Voice of Democracy with Freedom's Challenge and received a plaque.

Abandoned Areas Show Production Prospects

Oil operators in Kimball and Scotts Bluff counties test abandoned wells with promising results. Independent Ol and Gas Co and Braden-Gear Drilling Co report oil and mud oil in Kimball No 1 Westgate, while Red Feather Petroleum tests No 1 Hessler in Scotts Bluff. Mobil Oil Co files for three new sites in Dawes County and Exeter Drilling Co will drill all. Deuel County wildcat Carlson test abandoned as oil remains elusive.

Rural Cheyenne County graduation and track meet this weekend

A class of 17 will graduate at 2 p.m. Friday in St Patrick's High School Auditorium with Rev. Richard Brown delivering the commencement address and diplomas handed by County Supt I A Caldwell. Music includes Jorena Englert, Susan Borcher, Vicki Horst, and Debbie Livingston. The rural school track meet follows Saturday at Weymouth Field starting 8:30 a.m.

John Peetz Sr. Loses Leg After Burns on Farm

John Peetz Sr., an 82 year old Cheyenne County farmer, had his right leg amputated after severe burns from ignition of his overalls while burning weeds on the Peetz farm east of Sidney. He underwent surgery following a month in hospital and remains in critical condition. Peetz and his son Kenneth farm about four miles east of Sidney.

New Tourist Welcome Station Moves to Lincoln Sutherland Rest Area

The Game and Parks Commission will relocate its mobile tourist welcome station from Kimball’s Gotte Park to the Lincoln Sutherland Rest Area along eastbound Interstate 80. The move aims to better serve travelers entering Nebraska, with about 2,600 eastbound cars daily on I 80 at the rest area and 1,700 on U S 30 at Kimball.

Vo Tech Heads To Meet Here

The Nebraska Area Vocational Schools Council meets at Western Nebraska Vo-Tech this Wednesday with superintendents and presidents attending. State Education official Walt Berdcamp and leaders from Milford Hastings North Platte Norfolk Lincoln and Omaha schools join for an all day session with a noon luncheon and facility tour. This marks the first time the group gathers at the school.

Wheat Growth Lag Delays Panhandle Nebraska Crop Outlook

Federal observers report Nebraska wheat is growing at a nine year slow pace with average plant height 4.8 inches, well below last year and the 10 year norm. Moisture in the top four feet is above average, soil erosion and cutworm damage noted, spray programs add to 1970 costs, while southeast districts show better progress. Credit Bureau Sale Reported in Cheyenne County

The Credit Bureau of Cheyenne County is sold to Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Empson of Chappell. L. E. Wamsley and Dennis Wamsley announce the sale which took effect May 1. The Wamsleys note rising demands on their time led to the transfer from former owners Mr. and Mrs. Joe Kelley. The Empsons also run an insurance agency in Chappell and Mr. Empson has served as administrator at Miller Memorial Hospital, planning to leave by month’s end. The bureau has almost doubled in volume over the last two years.

Panhandle Forecast Highlights Mild, Unseasonably Warm

Fair and mild conditions continue this afternoon tonight and Thursday with southerly winds 15 to 25 mph. Highs reach 70 to 80 this afternoon, lows 35 to 45 tonight, and Tuesday highs 75 to 85. Wednesday through Friday stay fair and unseasonably warm with 80s by day and 50s at night.

Firemen Called Twice Sunday Near Sidney

The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department answered two calls Sunday morning for fires sparked by a passing train on the railroad right of way six miles east of Sidney. Fire crews extinguished the weeds, the blaze rekindled, and they returned at 11:45 a.m. to finish dousing the flames.

G Dewey Crees 70 of Gurley died Friday afternoon at West General Hospital Scottsbluff after a long illness Funeral services were held at Grace Lutheran Gurley with Rev Henry York officiating Burial followed at Dalton Cemetery He was born Sept 13 1899 in Decatur County Iowa and came to Gurley in 1925 to work for the Burlington railroad He married Iva Kreps Aug 17 1935 and survived by his widow two daughters seven grandchildren four brothers and three sisters He was preceded in death by two sons.
