Cutworm Fight Expands in Cheyenne County Wheat

County Agent Ivan Liljegren reports about 90 percent of infected wheat areas have been sprayed or prepared for spraying. He says 76 to 86 percent of county wheat land may be treated once spraying finishes and notes early heads forming west of Gurley.

Penalties Totaling 12305 From Late Property Filings

Cheyenne County assessor reports 32 individuals filed late personal property inventory schedules after the April 20 deadline. A 50 percent penalty was applied to each valuation, bringing the county’s extra valuation to 12305 dollars.

Real Estate Market Seen Steady Through Year

Harold Clingerman of the National Association of Real Estate Boards told Sidney Lions and Kiwanians that the realty market should stay firm this year. He cited strong home building last year and a projected 7 percent nationwide construction gain, with repair and modernization becoming big business and annual volume around 12 million dollars.

Ditch Fire Blamed in Highway Mishap

A ditch fire west of Lodgepole caused about 700 dollars in damage to two cars. Edward Norath of Lodgepole and John Kuykendall of Oxley Arkansas, 62, were traveling west on Highway 30 when smoke drifted over the road. Kuykendall slowed as the lead car. Norath said he did not see Kuykendall until just before impact. There were no injuries.

Sidneyite Enters University Rodeo at Nebraska Fair

Ron McMillen of Sidney a sophomore will ride Brahma bulls rope calves and steer dogs at the University of Nebraska rodeo part of the Farmers Fair May 11 and 12. Girls events include barrel racing pole bending and goat tying. Other fair attractions feature livestock showmanship barbecue midway dance dairy show and National Quarter Horse Show. Competitors are university students.

Rites Held Wednesday For Mrs. Alma O. Witters

Funeral services for 70 year old Mrs. Alma O. Witters were held Wednesday afternoon in Cheyenne County Memorial Hospital. Rev. R L Townsend led rites and burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery with Craig Mortuary in charge. Mrs. Witters, wife of Newton E. Witters, had lived in Cheyenne County for 69 years after moving with her parents in 1886. Pallbearers named Neal Atkins Dr. Leo Thomas Ralph Fleming Hilbert Borcher Walter Cork and N W Ladegard.

Denver Rites Monday For Brewer Infant

Kent Edward Brewer died at Mercy Hospital as a 12 hour old infant of Denver parents Mr. and Mrs. Dave Brewer. Services are Monday at Crownhill Cemetery with Moore Mortuary in charge. Survivors include grandparents Mrs Clara Brewer of Denver and Mr and Mrs William Gehrig of Sidney and Mrs Dave Brewer formerly Hazel Marie Gehrig.

Farm Price Index Rises In Nebraska

Nebraska farmers saw an April 15 price index rise to 237 for all crops and 239 for livestock and products, with cattle and hogs up and lambs at nine month highs. Corn and wheat also climbed to multiyear highs, while egg and sheep prices varied. Receipts remained seasonally light as markets adjusted.

The Liquor Control Commission reports Nebraska liquor tax and license revenues lag the 1955 pace. First four months total $964,000 versus $1,007,486. April $305,642 this year vs $349,320 last year. Hard liquor $121,844 in May and $135,867 in April 1955. beer $68,258 and $192,869. wine $23,764 and $27,539.

George Polk Oshkosh Businessman Dies at 69

Prominent western Nebraska figure George Polk died in Oshkosh last week at age 69. Polk owned a meat processing plant and market for many years after moving to Peetz Colorado in 1917 and then to Oshkosh in 1921.

Oil Lease Cancelled on State Land Near Sidney

Carter Oil Co. has cancelled its lease on the state school land section west of Sidney. State Board secretary Robert Hiett says the board does not want to re lease the land even if a valid application is presented. The April 23 cancellation leaves mineral rights with the state, clouding title for home lots and affecting loan prospects. A test case on financing has been submitted to a large insurance company after a previous loan denial over the title issue.

Carnegie Sales Course Holds Final Sidney Meeting

Graduation exercises for 32 students of the Dale Carnegie Sales Course were held at the Central School Auditorium.
