Osborn Building Sold to Pittams for Flooring Store

The M W Osborn building on Illinois Street between 11th and 12th Avenues was purchased by Kenneth and Lorraine Pittam for Sidney Flooring and Supply Co. The sale ends almost 50 years of Osborn ownership, with plans to move around August 1 and create a glass front for the new ground level store space. The building now houses Horrock TV Sales, The Blue Moon Cafe, and Fred Peters Auto Repair.

Belden Installed as Sidney Junior Chamber Leader

Ben Belden was installed as president of the Sidney Junior Chamber of Commerce for the coming year. The ceremony occurred at a joint dinner with the Mrs. Jaycees at the Country Club, with a slate of new officers and honors awarded to several members. Past president G. F. Bush received the honor from Belden, and new Jaycees were introduced along with Sparkplug awards for long-time members.

Crop Insurance Extension Date Extended to May 15

Lincoln Nebraska farmers receive an extension to May 15 for federal crop insurance applications on all spring crops. Ed Finigan state director notes rising interest in all risk protection as production costs climb and profit margins shrink. About 250000 in new premiums have been written this year in the state.

Route 71 Closure for Grading and Detour

State Highway Department announced four mile closure on Route 71 from Kimball north starting Thursday for grading and culvert work. A seven mile gravel detour will be used until further notice.

Weather Panhandle Forecast Sees Clouds and Light Rain Through Thursday

Panhandle forecast shows considerable cloudiness with occasional light rain and light snow. Tonight’s low 25 to 35 and Thursday’s high 45 to 55 with about 20 percent precipitation. Five day outlook indicates temperatures 5 to 15 degrees below normal through Monday.

Tournament Opens at Sidney Country Club Thursday

The Sidney Country Club launches its Thursday Men's Day with a nine hole Point-Par Sweepstakes at Hillside Golf Course. Ed Swanson, club golf chairman, announces handicaps from 1966 and an entry fee of $1.00. Prizes depend on entries and funds go to the prize pool.

City and County Reimbursement Law Approved in Nebraska

Nebraska lawmakers gave final approval to a bill reimbursing cities and counties for tax losses from repealing three forms. Sid ney would face higher city levies to offset the revenue gap after head taxes intangible property taxes and the property tax on household goods are outlawed.

K N Sets New Policy For Gas Line Farm Extension

Kansas Nebraska Natural Gas Co. begins July 1 a policy to bore the cost of extending pipelines to a rural customer’s property line in exchange for a minimum annual charge. The minimum equals 25 percent of the extension cost, prorated per well if multiple farms are served, with credit given monthly against the annual minimum and a December true up if needed. Previously farmers bore all extension costs to receive gas for irrigation pumps.

Lodgepole High School music department presents its spring concert at 7 30 p m Friday in the high school gym. The program features the band choir swing choir and soloists from the district music contest. Admission is 50 cents for adults 25 cents for students with proceeds to the band uniform fund.

Farm Bureau Names Cheyenne County Chairmen

Cheyenne County Farm Bureau board named new policy development chairmen Tuesday night. Halsey Fuller became general chairman and State Affairs chairman, Roland Green took County Affairs and membership, Rodney Mathewson was named wheat policy development chair, and Joe McMillen was tapped as director of cattle policy development. Stan Tryon reported progress on the tri edible bean national marketing administration, noting preliminary work finished and state development in Nebraska.

Cold weather damages Nebraska sugar beets and wheat

Unsettled conditions with below freezing temperatures and strong winds threaten western Nebraska crops. Great Western Sugar Co says about 90 percent of North Platte Valley beets may need replanting, totaling around 45000 acres, while Lodgepole Valley beets and early wheat also face losses. Moisture improves but continued cold could worsen outcomes.

Sidney Mrs Jaycees Win Top State Awards

The Sidney chapter of the Mrs Jaycees captured the top state award for the project of the month and the outstanding project of the year at the annual Jaycees convention in Grand Island April 28 to 30. Their project Restoration of the Post Commander Home earned a trophy first awarded this year. Sixty seven chapters competed for the top honor. The scrapbook by Mrs. Burton Harris won first place. At a Sidney Country Club meeting, officials announced the honors with Mrs Harris, Mrs Folkerts, Mrs Haupt and Mrs Belden pictured.

Rites Thursday For Serviceman Wreck Victim

A son of a Chappell couple was killed last Friday near Little Rock Arkansas. AGC John H Schlieker USN 28 on temporary duty. Military funeral at Holewiek Funeral Home Bridgeport 2 p.m. Thursday. Burial Dalton Cemetery. Survived by widow LaVon and three children all of Albuquerque. He served with Joint Task Force II Sandia Base New Mexico and had just been promoted to Chief Petty Officer.

New Library At Lodgepole To Be Put To Use Soon

The Nancy Fawcett Memorial Library at Lodgepole nears completion with only minor items left. After final inspection and approval by the architect and Nebraska Library Commission, the Lodgepole library board will begin moving in. Chairwoman Mrs James Sterling hopes the move finishes within two weeks.

Top Bid Made On Tract In County

A Cheyenne County tract of School land east of the one-well Keno Field drew the top price at a Nebraska oil gas lease auction. Allied Realty Co. paid 2.60 per acre for 640 acres, among the highest bids posted in some time. Other tracts sold as low as 0.50 per acre, typical unless the land proves a hot oil prospect.
