Tar Water As Fashionable Cure All In The Coffee House
Tar water, an eighteenth century remedy, was prepared by pouring a gallon of water over a quarter tar and taken as a half pint in the morning and a second dose in the afternoon. Its use grew so fashionable that a contemporary noted it was as common to order tar water in a coffee house as tea or coffee.

Three British steamers were sunk presumedly by German submarines: the Minneapolis previously operating between American ports and London, the St. Cecelia traveling from Portland Maine, and the Fenny Bridge from Philadelphia to Hull. Dispatches from Esbjerg report three British aeroplanes taking part in a raid on German airship sheds in Schleswig Holstein are missing. Two German patrol vessels were sunk and a British destroyer is believed lost after a big naval battle about three miles off the Grandy lightship. Five aeroplanes bombed Tondern. Several British hydro aeroplanes were shot down near Sylt. crews captured. No damage reported from Meyer water gate district.
