Nebraska Is Conservation Minded Now
In Nebraska the soil conservation movement has grown remarkably. Since 1940 the share of land in conservation districts rose from 1% to full county coverage, with nearly one-fifth under formal plans. Grass seeding, stubble mulch farming, terraces, waterways, tree planting, and irrigation improvements expanded dramatically, driven by district supervisors and partnerships with the Nebraska Experiment Station and SCS.

Dealers Work With SCS For Farm Benefit
NX Farm equipment dealers and United States Soil Conservation Service workers form a team. Local conservationists assess farms and design terraces water ways and ponds while dealers advise on equipment and techniques. The program promotes democracy by letting farmers organize soil conservation districts with government help. Examples show soil conservation pays with higher yields and increased equipment needs. The Soil Conservation Service began in 1933 followed by the 1935 act transferring it from the Soil Erosion Service. Telegraph Want Ads Get Results. Try Them.

Ditches Aid Soil Saving For Beyers
On the Frank Beyer and Sons farm near Sidney a 1947 diversion ditch of the conservation plan has stopped runoff damage across a 40 acre field. Bernard Beyer now owns the land with help from Lee Girardot of the U S Soil Conservation Service and the Cheyenne county soil conservation district. The plan also includes irrigation improvements, a new well, a field shelterbelt, contour farming and grass seeding. Frank Beyer recalls erosion and notes wheat losses due to storms would diminish with the ditch and plan in place.
