Miraculous Rescue After Car Skids Into Ditch Near Sidney
A Michigan couple, Gerald and Patricia McCall, were hurt when their 1949 Plymouth skidded on icy slush and overturned two and a half miles west of Sidney. Patricia was pinned under the hood but saved by Sioux Ordnance Depot workers John J. Chlopek and Delbert W. Rogers, who freed her within five minutes. Gerald was released after being treated. no fractures were found. Sheriff Schulz, the investigating officer, noted the car belonged to Edwin F. Waslawski, Fort Lewis, traveling to Washington with Waslawski’s possessions.

Two Sioux Ordnance Depot employees, John Chlopek and Del Rogers, helped lift a overturned car off a 19 year old pregnant woman from Michigan pinned beneath the hood on Highway 30. They were en route to Sidney with a wrecker to pick up a disabled school bus when the救 aid arrived. The timely actions likely saved the driver's life.

Rites Held for H Niemoller in Sidney Nebraska
Services for Herman Niemoller 86 longtime Cheyenne County resident were held Monday at Gehrig and Son Funeral Home with Rev. Harold B Taylor. Burial followed in Greenwood Cemetery. Niemoller born April 23 1867 in Gut Stockum Germany came to the United States 71 years ago settling in Tarkio Missouri Fulton Nebraska then Cheyenne County in 1915. He farmed near Sidney before retiring in 1940 and later lived with daughter Nellie at 1540 Forrest Sidney. Survivors include son Thomas W, daughters Mrs Laura E Rearden and Nellie Niemoller, plus three grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Pallbearers named. Mrs Grace Ellis as organist and M R Sigler to sing.

A Sidney High School modernization class survey of 450 patrons shows little faith in Operation Honesty as a tax fix. Of 349 responses, most oppose new or replacement taxes, favor sales tax over income tax, and blame the 50 percent assessment law for higher real estate taxes. Respondents also overestimate existing levies and note cigarette, gasoline, and poll taxes.

The Cheyenne County soil district and The American National Bank sponsor a soil conservation poster contest for fourth to eighth graders in two divisions. Prizes of 15 10 and 5 dollars will be awarded in four categories. Posters must be 24 by 18 inches, freehand lettering, and received by May 1, 1954. Judging emphasizes conservation concept, artistic merit, originality, and neatness.
