Five Hurt In Series Of Car Wrecks Across Area
A UP car department employee Earl Wilkins was badly injured when his car overturned at junction of highways 30 and 19 east of town. He suffered a broken jaw and other injuries. Patrol says he may have been lighting a cigarette when he lost control. Three Potter residents were injured near Pine Bluffs Wyoming in a two car crash. Verl Jessop 22 suffered a broken hip and brain concussion, Jinny Lee Gulick 18 was cut, Floyd Iverson was cut and bruised. Bystanders report the other driver Lee Pollock 50 and his wife unharmed. Geneva Nickel 18 of Sidney was treated for arm lacerations after an earlier Sidney area crash on highway 661 between Julesburg and Chappell. Surratt 50 of Sidney escaped with minor injuries. Car damage estimated at 300 dollars.

More than two hundred contestants from twenty seven districts competed at the junior high school spelling contest. Top honors in 7th and 8th grades went to Linda Hopkins and Helen Marie Bolke with second places for Deloris Lestman and Phyllis Jean Loch. In 5th and 6th grades first places went to Carol Tremain and Donald Shipman with runners up Lawrence Sorge and Jeff Bush. The expedition leaves this month and is expected to last about three months. The actual bombing tests against naval craft will be in May.
