Court upholds free agent status for Messersmith McNally
A federal appeals court panel upheld the authority of a baseball arbitrator to grant free agent status to pitchers Andy Messersmith and Dave McNally. The judges urged a reserve system to preserve game integrity and noted the need for negotiation over arbitration or court decisions. The ruling could let players sign 1976 contracts as one-year renewals unless revised.
