Gurley Youth Dies After Train Strikes Car
A 13 year old Gurley boy Clifford Wayne Houk III died at Memorial Hospital after a Burlington Northern freight struck the car he rode in. Rider Richard Spearow 15 was injured and listed in critical condition after surgery. The engineer was Jacob Sewald 53. Funeral services for Houk are set for 2 pm Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church Gurley burial at Oregon Trail Memorial Cemetery Bridgeport. A memorial is given to the Gurley Rescue Unit. The incident marks the fourth motor vehicle train death of the year per AP.

Baby beef weigh-in opens Cheyenne County Fair activities
The 1976 Cheyenne County Fair began with a weigh-in for 130 4-H baby beef calves. County Extension Agent Ken Sakurada said weights ranged from 650 to 750 pounds, meeting Nebraska 4-H rules and helping determine the weight gain champion later in the fair. Calves were ear-tagged for spring and summer identification and for show eligibility at state and national events.

Mason son found alive after Guatemala quake in Texas
Robert Mason 26, son of Sidney family, phoned his parents from Texas to say he was unharmed after the Guatemala City tremors that struck near Lake Atitlan. He traveled north into Mexico escaping roads blocked by mud and rock slides. A 1967 Ainsworth High School graduate, he recently left the US Army, plans to work a summer job in Texas, then finish geology studies at Nebraska. He had been vacationing in Guatemala.
