Workshop For Aged Care Set Next Week

Aged care workshop titled Care For The Aged will run next Wednesday and Thursday at Sidney City Auditorium with advance registration at 60. Sessions feature Dr. Jack A. Wolford and Dr. Joe Martin, plus talks by Mrs. Joan Hart and local church representatives. Registrations begin 8 30 a m, social workers, hospital staff, and the public are invited.

Soils Crops Meet Set For Tuesday

A special meeting on crops soils and fertilizers will be held at the Sidney City Auditorium next Tuesday afternoon. County Agent Ivan Liljegren invites all county farmers to attend at 1 30 p m. Two University of Nebraska agronomists will speak John Furrer on crops especially hybrid sorghums and Dr Mark Weldon on soils testing and fertilizers.

Springs Reopen West of Sidney Feed Lodgepole Creek

Natural springs on the Albin Olson farm southwest of Sidney were reopened by the city street and water departments with Olson’s permission. Casings sunk by Charles Green were cleaned, but a lower regional groundwater table and a dusty creek bed limit flow. Officials expect spring runoff to improve with precipitation, potentially raising the water table and increasing flow downstream.

Testing finished on new Nordberg engine at plant

Final testing of the ten cylinder Nordberg engine at the Sidney Municipal Power Plant concluded Wednesday evening, City Manager Murrey Fuller announced. The engine will be placed on the line for service, as the fifth Nordberg unit, capable of handling the city’s normal electric load, stands ready.

Two highway crashes kill two and injure six in Sidney region

Two crashes near Kimball and Sidney yesterday and today left Edward H. Sanders 54 of Payette Idaho dead after his eastbound car collided with a Kimball man’s truck. In the second crash four others injured including Lavone Reiboldt 22 and her 2½ year old daughter with the baby dying later. details cite slick snow and slush on Highway 19.

Sterlingite Man Sentenced for Break-In at Ordville Apt

Cheyenne County District Judge I J Nisley sentenced 21 year old Leo Rivera of Sterling to the Nebraska State Reformatory after Rivera pled guilty to breaking and entering tied to a fall robber y at the Ordville apartment of Mr and Mrs Raymond Hernandez. About 100 dollars worth of clothing food and money were stolen after Hernandez was assaulted in Sidney. Another Sterling youth David Padilla 18 also pled guilty to the break in and was paroled for two years.

Morrill Building Gutted By Early Fire

A morning blaze gutted the Morrill Variety store in one of Morrill's oldest buildings and damaged two nearby sites on Center Avenue. Smoke and water damaged Mrs. Hazel M. Moline’s office and the American Legion post. Fire officials said damage estimates and cause were not available, with Deputy State Fire Marshall Fred Otte away but expected at the scene. Fire investigators suspect wiring flaws as the cause.

A Sidney High School poll surveyed 331 residents to gauge support for lowering Nebraska’s voting age to 18. Overall 195 favored, 105 opposed, 31 undecided with notable splits among parents minors and adult strangers. The poll explored draft/ voting readiness and maturity claims.

51 Non-Conforming Use Certificates Filed in Sydney

Fifty-one property owners in Sydney have filed certificates of non conforming uses with the city inspector as required by the new zoning ordinance. Deadline for filing is Friday, March 15. If no certification is made for any use classified as non conforming, the city may halt operation of that use.
