Snow and sleet brought the season’s best moisture to Cheyenne County, with three tenths of an inch in most areas. The wet spell helped soil moisture, as melt began to soak dry topsoil, and the five day forecast hints at more moisture late in the week.
A unique strawberry plant for sale at Rudy's Foodliner this week. The British Sovereign plant grows up to 18 inches high and three feet across and has produced berries averaging five inches in circumference.
The 1956 Nebraska average income per farmer was 3364 dollars, down from 3656 the prior year, while the national average rose to 2415 dollars from 2268. Arizona led states with 11892, aided by irrigated cotton, and Nebraska joined ten states with cash receipts and government payments exceeding 1 billion dollars.
The Ordville school district will let bids around May 1 for an 80 by 120 foot quonset shaped gym attached to the south end of the current building. The project aims for a full basketball court and completion by fall at an estimated cost of 35 000 to 40 000 dollars funded largely by federal funds. The district also expects seventh and eighth graders from Ordville to attend locally next year due to enrollment changes while overall enrollment is 240, with possible additional teachers needed.
Two 15 year old Wellington youths, Richard Sloan and Gary Redmond, faced juvenile delinquency charges after a police stop in Bridgeport. They allegedly rode a stolen 1916 car through western Nebraska, stealing gas, pills, cigarettes, and goods worth more than $100, and rode overnight before arrest in a pasture near Bridgeport.
A reader at The Telegraph office demanded immediate copies of the next three issues including today and upcoming Friday and Monday editions. The request underscored the staff’s need to balance customer service with production constraints.
Fort Sidney announces Fort Sidney Days for June 21 and 22 1957 with carnival dates moved from Casper Wyoming causing a one week shift. Committee led by Merle Bobo Joel Babcock Stan Matzke Lew Schneider Dick Smith and Merle Bobo plan youth emphasis with a condensed two day program starting Friday and carnival opening Thursday.
As of 1956 end Cheyenne County held a record 13.084 million dollars in U S Savings Bonds, up from 11 million in 1953. Harold Partridge of the government bond department noted state total bonds at 1.058 billion with Cheyenne County fifth in per capita sales at 10817 dollars per person.
Sidney plans to transfer 15 to 20 acres northeast of the city from School District No. 1 to District No. 77 to create a low tax industrial zone near utilities and the Union Pacific tract. McNish estimates a $150 tax loss to No. 1 but says overall district valuation could rise with new industry. The Sidney board will survey public opinion and respond in two weeks.
Local elevator sources quote No 1 Wheat at 203 dollars per bushel and No 2 Wheat at 202 dollars per bushel. Prices reflect current market levels for wheat commodities and are reported by area elevators.
S L Rose of Sidney was appointed Cheyenne County highway supervisor effective March 1, replacing retiring John Ahlm after 30 years with the county. Also approved was the purchase of three dump trucks from McCormick Farm Equipment Co for 8 554 counting trade ins, with other bids listed.
The Sidney Board of Education raised wages by 10 per month for teachers with bachelor or masters degrees effective fall. Total district teaching staff stays at 87. four new teachers hired. Superintendent Weymouth noted about $7,000 more may be needed for salaries next year as longevity and wage adjustments roll in.
A noon fire in Sidneys business district damaged Laura's Gift Floral and Top Shop with about 300 dollars in damage and 125 dollars in smoke loss at the Palace Barber Shop next door. Fire Chief Harvey Vizina said ribbons on a shelf were ignited by a hot plate. A later trip was made to Trailer City for an overheated stove.
