Questions and Answers In New AAA Program

The new program named the AAA will launch with regional farmer meetings this week in Memphis and Chicago. It shifts from direct production control to soil fertility preservation, offers general subsidies without contracts, and plans regional development. Eligibility requires meeting performance standards, with likely lower benefit payments than before. Regional offices may stay in Washington initially, with no new hires. About 50 million acres may be diverted from commercial crops to soil conserving crops, aiming for retirement of such land. Subsidy basis to be decided at four regional meetings, likely a mix of flat sums and credits for diverted acres.
