Virginia Smith during a fund raising dinner at the Elks Club urged a zero budget approach to curb deficits. She advocated that 11 federal agencies present zero budgets and that Congress impose cuts to avoid urban abuse of housing subsidies while protecting rural use.
Democratic candidate Holly Hodge of Holdrege spoke at an Affirmative Action meeting in Sidney on Sunday outlining Ford Administration grain export controls as a central campaign issue in Nebraska's Third District. He cited grain inspection flaws, noted his agriculture background, and discussed campaign plans and fundraising needs.
Kimball Neb March fundraising pushes toward 98000 local funds to back a 600000 South Platte NRD project to repair Oliver Dam and develop recreation at Oliver Reservoir. James Thomas Hansen Scotts Bluff County public defender filed as a Democratic candidate for Nebraska 3rd District in western Nebraska. Hansen, 32, lives in Gering and has served as public defender since 1975. He aims to curb Washington over regulation focusing on resources water and minerals and federal decision making. His news conference was planned for 1 30 p m. His primary opponent is William Holly Hodge of Holdredge a wheat farmer.
Kansas City AP reports that despite bright skies Western Kansas and adjacent regions faced severe drought. Moisture remains below normal with record warmth in many areas. Wheat crops suffer while fires spread across Missouri and Kansas as dry soils and late winter dryness threaten planting and yields.
Nebraska's air quality shows slight improvement in 1975 over 1973 but remains dirtier than 1974 due to drought. Monitoring at 40 sites indicates Omaha made the most gains, nine of ten stations registering better pollution levels though dust from dry conditions affected readings. Cozad recorded the worst 12.5, Sutherland the best 33.2, Chadron 353, with a state goal of 60 or cleaner.
